Joyce Ng - Core Networks Engineer

Coming from a course of Bachelor of Science / Bachelor of Information Systems, telecommunications was not a major part of my university studies. However, I have found the telecommunications industry to be an incredibly dynamic and vibrant one, where everyone is constantly learning, no matter how experienced they are.

As a graduate, the training program at Ericsson includes a combination of formal training courses, as well as on-the-job training, where the graduates are able to work on projects with the guidance of someone more experienced. In addition to the technical training, we have also had the opportunity to participate in soft-skills courses to further develop interpersonal and organisational skills.

I have found that well-refined skills in these areas are crucial in day-to-day work within Ericsson. Dealing with our customers in the Asia-Pacific region is core to the business, so proficient communication and the ability to deal with cultural differences are vital.

Beginning in the Core Networks supply area at Ericsson in 2005, I have since had experience in a number of projects, which have given me opportunities to travel to Malaysia and India to upgrade the mobile networks of our customers there.

Although the pressure working on-site is demanding, the achievement and satisfaction when the work is successful far outweighs any initial anxiousness. If you love persevering with challenges, are enthused by the latest technologies and love to travel, then Ericsson may be just the place for you!

Rolando Navas - Network Engineer

I joined Ericsson Australia's graduate program in February 2004; I was even more fortunate to be allocated to the IP Centre; a team that greatly suits my interests and working habits. After graduating with an Electrical and Computer Systems Engineering degree, it was very challenging to find employment at the time, the industry was just recovering from a very tough period and the number of applicants vastly outweighed the amount of positions that were being offered by employers.

My first 3 months at Ericsson were overwhelming to say the least! There were so many processes that were foreign to me and the technologies that I studied were now part of my practical day to day activities. I was lucky enough to travel to Kuala Lumpur within 6 weeks of joining the team - my mentor was responsible for conducting a Broadband demonstration to one of our Malaysian customers. This was a great experience for me, not only did I learn a lot about the product (which I have since been supporting for the last 2 years), but I was also required to deal with the customer and meet their expectations.

I have now been involved in a number of projects and have thoroughly enjoyed each one. Every project is challenging and a different learning experience. It's very enjoyable to travel to different countries and experience different cultures and the local ways of working. The variety of work is great - I have worked on many different kinds of projects, ranging from installing the very first broadband network in Tonga, to integrating our ADSL products to a large IP data network all around Thailand.

Innovation and flexibility are things that I'm passionate about, and the IP Centre team is a big advocate of implementing improved methods on a daily basis. I'm currently in charge of driving innovation for my team; this greatly improves our work environment and employees' moral whilst saving time and money.  We have a flexible working environment which also adds to overall job satisfaction.

I look forward to the exciting times ahead at Ericsson, and can assure anyone that is looking to join the team, that if you are looking to be challenged in an innovative, diverse and flexible work environment, this is the ideal place for you.
