The latest product in the broadband family, offering speeds we’ve only dreamt about, is a step closer to our shores.
Ericsson has announced it will deliver an ultra-high speed broadband trial network to SingTel, the national operator of Singapore. SingTel will be the first operator in South East Asia to deploy VDSL2 in its network.
Based on Ericsson’s EDA VDSL2 (Ethernet DSL Access Very-High-Bit Rate Digital Subscriber Line 2) broadband technology, the network will enable SingTel to deliver services over existing copper lines, offering speeds of up to 100 Mbps.
VDSL2 enables ultra-fast triple play services including voice, internet and high definition television, over standard copper. To enjoy these services, households just have to purchase a new modem.
Ericsson General Manager of Broadband Marketing, Steve Inglis, says while South East Asia is first off the mark with this revolutionary offering, it’s something which could conceivably be deployed in Australia and New Zealand today.
“VDSL2 is suited to concentrated areas so it’s ideal for deployments in apartment blocks, campuses, and other multi-dwelling or multi-business units.”
He says for telecommunications operators, it puts them in a completely different league, enabling them to offer a range of services, previously unavailable to customers.
“This will allow Singtel customers to enjoy ultra-high speed broadband services, of speeds up to 100 Mbps, and exciting new applications, such as high definition TV and turbo charged internet.”
He says several operators around the globe have already expressed interest in the technology.
“This success really underlines Ericsson’s innovation in broadband access. We were the first provider to launch a miniature IP DSLAM, which can be deployed in small exchanges and equipment cabinets. We were the first in the Australasian market to deploy commercial ADSL2+ equipment, and now we’re the first to launch a trial network for VDSL2 in South East Asia.”
Ericsson is shaping the future of mobile and high-performance broadband through its continuous technology leadership. Providing innovative solutions in more than 140 countries, Ericsson is helping to create the most powerful communication companies in the world.

About VDSL2
Ericsson's EDA solution is the most widely deployed IP/Ethernet DSLAM with more than 60 contracts globally. With the addition of VDSL2 capabilities in EDA, Ericsson further strengthens its competitiveness in the Broadband access market. VDSL2 is an emerging standard, expected over time to be deployed in significant volumes in the broadband access market. VDSL2 was initially approved by ITU in May this year, and work is now under way to secure it as a globally adopted technology. The focus in the market will initially be to secure vendor interoperability. Within the VDSL2 standard, features such as dual latency enable quality to be built into the network in all layers, which will be needed to handle all aspects of providing upcoming services such as IPTV. Another key feature is the ability to support both ADSL2+ and VDSL2 from the same DSLAM with a so-called fall back functionality.
