Ericsson has launched its long term IPTV vision, saying it’s not just about a traditional TV broadcast over the internet, but a fully personalised, interactive, multimedia service - available no matter where you are.
Ericsson’s General Manager of Broadband, Steve Inglis, says Ericsson's vision is of a personalised and highly interactive service over three screens (your pc, mobile and TV), integrating media with communications services to deliver the service, no matter where the viewer is. And its magic bullet? IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS), part of a standardised, open architecture for next generation services.
“We have already demonstrated this open approach in our cooperation with Sony, Kasenna, and Tandberg Television at the recent Globalcomm tradeshow in Chicago.”
Inglis says by 2008 the introduction of IMS in operators’ networks will allow even greater convergence of television and mobile services.
“You will, for example, be able to use your mobile handset as a means of identification and control for your IPTV service. You would be able to access your favourite services and content, wherever you are, whenever you want and whatever device you are using.”
So what does that mean?
“On your way home from work you can use your mobile to find out what’s on TV, and if you’re not going to make it home in time to watch your favourite show, you simply start a network personal video recording of the TV program. When you are home you can watch the program at your convenience using your fixed IPTV service.”
Ericsson is shaping the future of mobile and high-performance broadband through its continuous technology leadership. Providing innovative solutions in more than 140 countries, Ericsson is helping to create the most powerful communication companies in the world.

About Ericsson’s IPTV offering
Ericsson's vision of personalised IPTV services delivered over broadband is based on open standards, including the combination of Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA) technologies, for digital entertainment, with the IMS standard for delivering enriched communications services.
About IMS
Ericsson IMS can today provide fixed, mobile and enterprise users with a range of new services, such as IMS Push to Talk, IMS weShare (combinational services for sharing media while talking) and IMS Multimedia Telephony (including IP telephony and IP Centrex). Additional IMS services are constantly being developed - by Ericsson or other companies - making Ericsson IMS a future-proof and cost-effective selection for operators.
Ericsson IMS offers services over packet-based networks and is a cornerstone for an efficient IP-centric network environment. It complies with the 3GPP/3GPP2 IMS standard. Standards are critical for user adoption because they allow access to services that function seamlessly over networks provided by different suppliers.
Ericsson is the leader in the IMS area with 19 IMS system contracts for commercial launch and an additional 40 trials, distributed over the Americas, Europe, Asia and Africa.
