Ericsson has been selected by Norfolk Telecom to provide a GSM network to Norfolk Island. The network will provide residents of the Island access to voice and SMS services and will allow visitors with GSM handsets to roam onto the Norfolk Telecom network.
Ericsson will deliver and deploy a network configuration of four base stations, with a single switch.
For the first time Norfolk Islanders will have access to mobile communications, including services such as SMS, voicemail and prepaid capability.
Tony Malligeorgos, Director of Marketing & Business Development for Ericsson Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands, said that Ericsson has a long and proud association with Norfolk Island being the provider of NI Telecom’s fixed line telephone exchange since telephones were introduced to the Island in 1972.
“Ericsson is very proud to have been chosen by Norfolk Telecom as their partner with which to enter the GSM market, as Ericsson continues to provide communications to all.
“We will deliver a cost effective and appropriate solution for the needs of the Island community,” Mr. Malligeorgos said.
Kim Davies, Manager Norfolk Telecom, said that given the size of Norfolk Island and its population of just 2000, the new network is considered to be one of the smallest GSM commercial networks in the world.
“The network will provide Norfolk Island’s residents with access to 2G and SMS services and has capacity to handle a population of up to 4000 to allow for visitors to the Island with GSM handsets, who will be able to roam onto the Norfolk Telecom network,” Mr. Davies said.
Ericsson is shaping the future of Mobile and Broadband Internet communications through its continuous technology leadership. Providing innovative solutions in more than 140 countries, Ericsson is helping to create the most powerful communication companies in the world.
