Ericsson today announced that national broadband company Internode has selected Ericsson's EDA DSLAMs for the next phase of its growth, with an order for a further 30,000 EDA DSLAM ports.
Ericsson, a world leading supplier of fixed and mobile broadband networks, will supply ADSL2+ ports, software and support to extend the Australia-wide roll-out under Internode's national deployment program.
Internode's Managing Director Simon Hackett said his company was deploying ADSL2+ broadband in both major cities and regional areas: "Our business is experiencing record growth, driven by the demand for quality broadband from both business and retail customers," he said.
As well as deploying its own DSLAM equipment to deliver broadband in capital cities including Melbourne, Canberra, Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide, Perth and Hobart, Internode has delivered innovative broadband solutions for areas of regional Australia.
Internode last year completed the Coorong Communications Network, which in 2005 was recognised as Australia's Best Regional Communication Solution by the Australian Telecommunication User's Group (ATUG). This network uses ADSL2+ and broadband wireless to deliver Internet access and Voice-over-IP phone services for the Coorong District Council, and for residents of the 8800 sq km Coorong region - the largest local government area in South Australia.
Mr. Hackett said Internode had designed a network with low running costs to meet the challenge of low population density across this large area. "Ericsson's EDA DSL equipment has proved an excellent fit due to its compact size, reliability, and superb performance," he said.
Tony Malligeorgos, Ericsson's Director of Business Development commented: "We are pleased to extend our partnership with Internode and help drive innovation for new services for Internode customers."
He continued: "Broadband is the fastest-growing telecom service in the world today. As usage increases there will be greater focus on capacity and quality of service. Ericsson's broadband portfolio is designed with this in mind. Our open standards approach can support multiple access technologies allowing our customers maximum flexibility and investment protection."
Ericsson is shaping the future of Mobile and Broadband Internet communications through its continuous technology leadership. Providing innovative solutions in more than 140 countries, Ericsson is helping to create the most powerful communication companies in the world.

About Broadband
The 2006 Ericsson Consumer and Enterprise Lab survey reveals that broadband is no longer the domain of the "early adopters". The respondents (over 2000 samples representing the Australian metropolitan population 15-64) stated that getting a broadband connection is on their top two digital lifestyle products.
The next 12 month will show continued growth for broadband in Australia. Half of those who currently do not have broadband intend to get connected within the next 12 months. The growth is further fuelled by 1 in 10 existing broadband users who intend to upgrade their connections.
About ADSL2+
According to Ovum industry analyst, David Kennedy, a full ADSL2+ service allows a user to use a PC, a laptop computer, two phones and a high definition TV simultaneously.
