Broad portfolio of interactive, personalised solutions for mobiles and TV to stimulate market growth and generate advertising revenues
For the first time in Australia, Ericsson has demonstrated numerous innovative multimedia services and solutions designed to enrich the end-user experience and boost the growth of the multimedia industry.
Using practical, real-world applications, Ericsson showcased the latest advances in multimedia technology, including IPTV, Mobile TV, Participation TV, networked entertainment, service delivery platforms and a range of new and innovative applications, many of which support advertising.
According to Kursten Leins, Strategic Marketing Manager - Multimedia, Ericsson Australia, Ericsson's applications enable users to experience more interactive and personalised communication, while providing new advertising revenue streams for media firms and telecom operators.
"The improved availability and capabilities of mobile and fixed broadband have sparked a growth in rich end-user services. The coming together of three industries - telecom, media and internet - is creating a whole new world of possibilities for people to enjoy, socialize and consume, and also to make life more convenient and efficient. Ericsson is driving this growth and taking the multimedia business to a whole new level. We see our role as the multimedia enabler in this emerging market," said Mr Leins.
This new 'networked media' market is forecast by research firm Analysys Research to be worth 107 billion euros by 2011. Telecom networks are now able to efficiently manage distribution of all types of content and media such as TV, music, games, print, radio and video, and for users this means content that is easily available from a channel providing a more interactive experience.
A new generation of "digital natives" has emerged, those born into digital technology and used to the immediacy of hypertext and a broad range of content, including downloaded music, available 24/7. They have been networked most or all of their lives. The life arc of a typical 21-year-old entering the workforce today has, on average, included sending and receiving 25,000 emails, instant messages and SMS, 10,000 hours using a mobile phone, and 3,500 hours spent online social networking.
"Global partnerships are a key driver in developing the multimedia sector and stimulating the creation of attractive content. The contribution of our strategic partnerships, such as Sony, Sony Ericsson, and Sony BMG, allow Ericsson to strengthen our multimedia offerings," said Mr Leins.
At Berlin's Broadband World Forum last month, Ericsson, Sony and Sony Ericsson jointly demonstrated the combination of technologies based on IMS and DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance) standards, enabling consumers to access innovative multimedia services anywhere, anytime and on any device.
Ericsson Multimedia Technologies and Services
Ericsson's comprehensive portfolio of industry-leading multimedia services now includes innovative advertising solutions for mobile (MobileTV) and television (IPTV) that enable personalised and interactive consumer experiences.
IPTV: The power of personalized, interactive content
IPTV gives fixed operators the opportunity to bundle interactive communication services (such as voice, messaging, presence), with TV services. It allows personalized experiences with such features as video on demand and time shifting.
Mobile TV
With mobile TV, subscribers can enjoy and interact with video and TV content on their mobile devices wherever they are. Mobile operators can derive further revenues from their existing networks and build customer loyalty.
IMS: a foundation for fixed-mobile convergence
IMS enables and drives efficient converged service offerings. It is the key to delivering multimedia services with telecom-grade quality. It creates opportunities for operators to deliver attractive, easy-to-use, reliable and profitable multimedia services - including voice, pictures, text and video, or any combination of these - with existing services. Users can enjoy attractive converged services regardless of access network and device.
Participation TV: Me-On-TV
Ericsson's Me-On-TV solution allows consumers to upload, publish and share live or pre-recorded video content via any mobile device, to any screen anywhere. Ericsson and Endemol have reached an agreement to develop interactive TV and user-generated content via Me-On-TV.
Mobile Navigator
Ericsson's Mobile Navigator enables a 3G mobile handset to be used as a portable navigation device, delivering map and route information to anywhere with 3G coverage.
Napster Mobile
Ericsson's Napster Mobile provides operators and media companies with a turn-key branded or white-label music service, providing users with access to millions of tracks from leading music labels.
Mobile Service Delivery Platform
After the recent acquisition of Drutt, Ericsson is now able to offer an "out of the box" Mobile Service Delivery Platform to customers, enabling rapid development and offering of mobile services to consumers.
Ericsson is shaping the future of Mobile and Broadband Internet communications through its continuous technology leadership. Providing innovative solutions in more than 140 countries, Ericsson is helping to create the most powerful communication companies in the world.
