Advanced Metering Infrastructure
Delivering the enabling communications infrastructure for the future

The rollout of automated (or smart) metering requires a complete transformation of the billing, metering and field service operations across electricity distributors’ entire supply chain.  It will drive exponential growth in the volume of data transferred in near real-time between electricity distributors, retailers and their customers, and require massive investment in new metering technology and the supporting applications and infrastructure.

This is where Ericsson can support our customers.

End-to-End Communications Infrastructure

Ericsson delivers the end-to-end communications infrastructure required to provide the backhaul capability for advanced metering, including:

  • Transmission solutions (SDH/PDH) , IP Multi-service edge routing, microwave and packet radio networks (WCDMA/GPRS)
  • Partnering with WiMAX and Mesh Radio suppliers
  • Data centre managed services
  • Project management of rollouts

Our Services

We design and build this infrastructure, then help you manage and maintain it.  Ericsson can also assume full responsibility for the day-to-day operations of our customer’s network, providing significant cost reductions. When managing a customer's complete network operations, we assure end-user service quality and carrier grade network performance. We take responsibility for all day-to-day operations, including network planning, building, optimisation, operation, maintenance and support. Increased operational efficiency is achieved through Ericsson’s economies of scale, resource utilisation and best practice processes.

We also help customers optimise their field service operations to effectively handle the scale of rollout and implement data management solutions to manage, interpret, share and store huge volumes of near-real time data.   In addition, Ericsson works with large energy consumers to develop strategies for adjusting operations to mitigate the financial impact of time-of-use pricing.

Our Experience

We have unmatched local and global experience in successfully delivering major, transformational communications infrastructure projects for the utilities and telecommunications industry.

We are the undisputed industry leader in managed services, with a strong track record for success. Ericsson has officially announced more than 100 managed services contracts with customers worldwide since 2002. Ericsson Australia and New Zealand is a Centre of Excellence for Managed Operations in the Asia Pacific region. Locally, our Global Network Operations Centre, based in Sydney, is one of eight Ericsson specialised support centres globally.

Acea, the second largest electricity and water distributor in Italy, awarded Ericsson a 10 year managed service agreement to manage and develop Acea's system for Automatic Meter Reading (AMR) that incorporates some 1.5 million electricity customers.

Choosing Ericsson as your communications partner for complex, multi-technology, multi-vendor projects reduces risk and cost, while future-proofing your investment.
