Ericsson LTE Radio Access Network

LTE is the next step in the technical evolution of 2G/3G networks. It offers superior user experience with simplified technology for next-generation mobile broadband, and Ericsson’s LTE RAN network currently supports download speeds up to 450 Mbps in commercial networks. Today most operators have 2G and 3G systems deployed and recognize the need to deploy 4G to keep their mobile broadband offerings competitive. Ericsson offers an advanced mixed mode (2G/3G/LTE) solution that offers an efficient means for operators to migrate their networks to LTE. Our solution enables operators to more efficiently support existing 2G and 3G traffic with current resources, thereby clearing spectrum to provide high speed LTE data services.

Ericsson LTE solution in combination with IP RAN, Evolved Packet Core and mobile backhaul provides the capacity and flexibility to cope with network evolution challenges, enabling the best user experience.



Mobile broadband is a reality and as the Internet generation is accustomed to having broadband access wherever they go and not just at home or in the office.

In addition, Ericsson predicts that by 2020 there will 50 billion connected ”devices”. The efficient design of LTE enables it to embrace the huge range of demanding solutions and services for monitoring and surveillance of billions and billions of machines as well as the high bandwidth demanding media related services.

With LTE, the user experience will enhance more capacity demanding applications such as interactive TV, mobile video blogging, advanced games and professional services.

In parallel with the LTE radio access, packet core networks are also evolving to the flat EPC architecture. This new architecture is designed to optimize network performance, improve cost efficiency and facilitate the uptake of mass-market IP-based services.

LTE radio network products will have a number of features to help simplify and reduce cost of the building and management of next-generation networks. This is known as Self Organizing Networks (SON) which includes features such as self-configuration and self-optimization thereby minimizing the intervention needed by operations staff.

LTE will be deployed in parallel with simplified, IP-based core and transport networks that are easier to build and maintain.

In summary operators can in a flexible way introduce LTE to match their existing network, spectrum and business objectives for mobile broadband and multimedia services.

Ericsson License Assisted Access (LAA) introduces LTE to unlicensed spectrum on small cells to deliver a data speed boost to smartphonesTo improve app coverage indoors in any size or type of commercial building – whether that’s a suburban shopping center, train station or a high-rise office building – Ericsson is adding Licensed Assisted Access (LAA) to its indoor small cell portfolio, the Ericsson Radio Dot System and RBS 6402 Indoor Picocell. LAA introduces the security and performance associated with high-performance LTE networks to spectrum available in the 5 GHz band.

LAA benefits all consumers and business users on smartphones and other mobile devices:

  • Users on LAA: Consumers can leverage the combination of licensed and unlicensed bands to achieve higher peak rates indoors.
  • Users on cellular licensed bands only: By distributing traffic between the licensed and unlicensed bands, LAA frees up capacity on the licensed spectrum, benefiting users on those bands.
  • Users on Wi-Fi only: LAA frees up capacity for Wi-Fi users, by employing fair sharing techniques and using the 5GHz band more efficiently.

Combining licensed and unlicensed technologies and leveraging higher frequency spectrum bands on small cell architectures, LAA is a key milestone on the road to 5G. LAA delivers an indoor performance boost for smartphone users, while optimizing available wireless network resources for all users.
