The current development of GSM, CDMA and WCDMA networks puts strong demand on controller efficiency. The network controllers (BSC, RNC and EVO) must help operators meet future expansion needs, while also protecting today’s investments.

The success of smartphones places new demands on mobile networks, and especially on RNCs. Smartphones require on average four to five times more signaling capacity than feature phones. Mobile-broadband services provided to laptops, netbooks and tablets are also contributing to the rapid growth of data traffic.

The only true multi controller

Ericsson’s latest controller – Evo Controller 8200 – is the market’s only true multi controller. The Evo Controller 8200 is a vital component of the RAN evolution strategy. It combines the functions of the GSM base station controller (BSC) and the UMTS radio network controller (RNC) in one common network controller. With the Evo Controller, we are making it easier to leverage investments in GSM, while offering WCDMA customers even higher performance levels. We have also added new capabilities, such as a Wi-Fi controller and smart mobile-broadband (MBB) functionality into the multi controller.

BSC (HD BSC) and RNC (RNC 3820) are well established in the market. They represent future-proof investments for operators requiring TDM or ATM on all transport interfaces, combined with or without IP.

Ericsson’s offering

The Ericsson GSM BSC and WCDMA RNC product family gives an operator a wide choice of configurations for different network topologies, from metropolitan optimized for high traffic to rural optimized for coverage.

The Evo Controller 8100, is the first building block for a common controller, where the BSC can be expanded with Evo Controller 8200/RNC capabilities. The Evo Controller 8200/BSC, with support for more than 3000 transceivers in one single sub rack, brings capacity density to the next level.

The Evo Controller 8200/RNC is built to handle the increased demand from smartphones, as well as laptops. With its compact and highly scalable capacity, it is the market’s most efficient RNC. Ericsson will increase the functionality further with smart MBB functionality to utilize the radio resource in the most optimized way.

The Evo Controller 8200/MULTI provides the possibility to combine BSC, RNC and Wi-Fi controllers with a few common building blocks. Smart MBB capabilities can also be added into the same EvoC cabinet.

For CDMA networks, Ericsson delivers an all-IP base station controller for supporting voice, and a high-capacity network controller for EV-DO packet data.
