Multi-screen is now a reality and consumers expect to be able to view TV content on any device, from any location and at any time. In an industry where TV content hours and internet capable video streaming devices are rapidly increasing, operators must find solutions that can match the scale needs of today while at the same time allowing for future service growth. Ericsson's Multiscreen Video Processing solution addresses both of these needs.
Linear Multiscreen Reference Head-End System
The solution comprises the Linear Multiscreen reference head-end system, a powerful combination of the Ericsson SPR1200, a dense real-time hardware-based transcoder, and the Ericsson NPR1200, a highly flexible, adaptable software-based segmentation and encryption device.
The optimal mix of hardware and software is key in solving today and tomorrow's multi-screen challenges. A hardware-based transcoder provides both the necessary scalability and the picture quality required to provide the quality of service consumers demand. The flexibiilty of the software-based network processor is needed to adapt to any network architecture and to respond to new technology developments in the dynamic multi-screen space. The combination of these products reduces total cost of ownership by providing unmatched levels of scalability and a compact form-factor that contains power consumption and real-estate utilization.
Multi-screen Monetization
The combination of the "culture of free" on the internet, coupled with the fact that multi-screen moves traditional TV from a pure lean-back experience closer to a lean-forward experience, has meant existing operator business models are up-ended by the introduction of multi-screen services. Fortunately, the technology underpinning multi-screen delivery creates many opportunities to build new, and potentially more valuable, models.
Ericsson's Multiscreen Video Processing solution expands on service delivery to encompass reference ecosystems to support the monetization of multi-screen through new business models. The focus is on live-to-file asset generation for maximization of the value of short tail content and multi-screen finely targeted advertising. In each area, the solution packages growing ecosystem functionality along with Ericsson's system integration capabilities into a proposition that is unique in the market.
Core Product Offering
Multiscreen Video Processing is built around two core products in Ericsson's video compression portfolio, the SPR1200 and NPR1200.
The SPR1200 is a very dense, optimized hardware transcoder that can produce many more profiles per service within a single 1RU chassis. In addition to Ericsson's market-leading picture quality, the product features the ability to generate full-frame rate progressive HD profiles (required by top-end mobile devices) from an interlaced HD source typical of broadcast services. It also incudes a powerful audio engine to support the multiple languages, bit-rates and codecs required.
The NPR1200 is a very flexible packaging solution that functions as the bridge between the broadcast and IT networks. It supports all common HTTP delivery formats, including the new MPEG-DASH. It is designed with flexibility in mind to allow it to adapt to the broad variety of delivery network architectures that operators have deployed, and can keep pace with the rapid developments in multi-screen technologies.
By separating the SPR1200 and NPR1200, operators can push segmentation towards the edge of their network. They can also manage separately the video transcoding side of multi-screen, which is stable from a technology perspective, from the packaging and delivery side, which continues to see rapid evolution.
Ericsson SPR1200
The Ericsson SPR1200 is a high density adaptive bit-rate (ABR) stream processor which enables operators to launch television services in the multi-screen environment. It delivers services to multiple internet connected devices simultaneously, including connected TVs, notepads and mobile phones.
Ericsson NPR1200
The Ericsson NPR1200 is a highly flexible network processor designed to bridge the broadcast and IT worlds. It enables delivery of linear TV content to connected devices using HTTP Adaptive Streaming technology.
