IP Edge

What is “IP Edge”?
The IP Edge comprises the systems and functions that deliver a high QoE for the services that end users demand. These systems are placed between the metro and the core or more precisely at the edge of the IP core. It is at this point of the network where convergence of multiple services occurs.

These services include IP routing and transport, subscriber management (fixed-line and mobile), and any combination of the following:
1.  L2/L3 VPN (business services),
2. Content Caching for delivery of OTT video  of web pages
3. Service mobility from mobile to fix or vice versa with WiFi gateway functionanlity
4. Multimedia services, such as VoIP
5. Deep Packet Inspection for traffic management and policy control
6. Other services that are yet to emerge as consumers and business may demand in the future

A platform that is powerful enough to consolidate the above functions benefits from technical and economic advantages vs having to deploy multiple systems: fewer ports, inter-card communication instead of inter-system communication, common element management systems and others. Ericsson offers consolidated functionality at the IP Edge with its products.

Ericsson’s products for this point in the network include:
1. SSR 8000 IP Service Delivery Platform
2. SmartEdge Multi-Service Edge Routers
3. SM family

Collectively, and separately, these products offer a subset or all of the services that we mentioned above. They operate with Ericsson’s vision of simpler, smarter, and more scalable solutions at the IP Edge. Depending on your project and the customer needs any one of the above platforms will be able to fulfill the customer networking requirements at the IP Edge. These products have multiple models and they can be selected for the edge of the IP network as well as the metro, or even in the access. They have been integrated, tested and verified with some of the most successful Ericsson’s solutions, such as IP RAN, and MPBN.

SSR 8000 family, the most recent addition to Ericsson’s IP Edge product portfolio, is suitable to offer modernization of networks that require massive scaling in both data and control planes for fixed and mobile network infrastructures. It is capable of offering all of the services listed above in one platform. These services are available based on its roadmap.
