'Science Day'
Science Days

The 'Science Day' is a market place for R&D projects Ericsson is driving in cooperation with academies and institutes.
At tis year's CeBIT Ericsson offers its cooperation partners with this platform a forum to present and exchange experiences. Ericsson is currently running a number of exciting research and development projects with leading universities and institutes in Germany.

Therefore we invite our customers, partners and the members of the dedicated research teams to get a detailed view on background and vision of these joint R&D projects.
Of course, we welcome as well potential new employees and other interested visitors.

Get inspired and visit us in the Ericsson pavilion on Saturday, March 8 for exciting demos and high-tech presentations.

Cooperative mobile communication
Using cell phones in moving trains or cars can be disappointing due to noise, interruptions, and breakdowns of the transmission. To improve the quality of voice or video transmission even in such harsh mobile environments, this research project lets mobile devices cooperate.

With this so-called cooperation diversity approach, another device (e. g., another cell phone in the same train) overhears the original transmission and helps by repeating parts of it via its own channel. Joining these repeated parts with the original can improve the transmission quality. Significant gains were already measured in offices and on the University's own test train for real transmitter prototypes. So far, the project has focused on the IEEE 802.11 technology for wireless local and vehicular networks but looks forward to improve cellular networks.

NGN Client for TISPAN PSTN/ISDN Simulation and Emulation Services
Fraunhofer FOKUS is implementing a NGN client for the Ericsson ETSI TISPAN NGN PSTN/ISDN Simulation and Emulation Service. The ETSI Telecommunication and Internet Converged Services and Protocols for Advanced Networking (TISPAN) emerged in September 2003, with a vision of Convergence for Next Generation Networks.

This vision encompasses rich multimedia service capabilities across boarders of IP and legacy telecommunication networks. Examples of such service include conversational services such as Voice call, video call, chat, multimedia sessions, down to content-on-demand services (Broadcast, streaming, browsing, etc.).

Project Cooperative Cars (CoCar)
The Cooperative Cars (CoCar) project aims at basic research on car communication based on cellular mobile communication technologies.

Five partners out of the telecommunications- and automotive industry develop platform independent communication protocols and innovative system components.

During the project the feasibility of existing and future networks supporting traffic management and driver safety applications will be evaluated. Finally, selected applications will be implemented and validated in a prototype.
