The goal of Ericsson’s recently unveiled Traffic and Revenue Growth initiative is to help operators earn more money from their existing mobile networks, while simultaneously getting them started down the 3G path. “We have analyzed the services that have proven to be good sources of revenue. We’ve also combined various skills, services and products from a number of Ericsson units in order to provide a one-stop shop for customers,” says Kurt Sillén, who is responsible for the initiative.

Images, voice, audio and video content - indeed, all kinds of rich media - will soon reach mobile terminals as part of mobile multimedia services. The introduction of standardized mobile messaging services, such as EMS and MMS, will enrich person-to-person messaging and pave the way for content-push services. On-demand mobile media services will be delivered to users via media streaming and download techniques that enrich mobile browsing and general content access.

Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications has unveiled the P800, an advanced, open, pen-based smartphone that is positioned as the ultimate mobile multimedia experience. The P800, a feature rich Symbian OS v7.0 phone, features a large color touch-screen, a built in camera and a multimode browser.

SMS has proved extremely popular. Now, with the addition of features like color pictures, animations, audio samples and video clips, MMS promises an increase in messaging capabilities that will create a new source of revenue for network operators as well as content and service providers.
