Parlay X defines a set of easy-to-use web services that provide simple and high-level access to widely used telecommunications functions. It is designed to enable the creation of new telecommunications applications and services for enterprise and consumer markets, utilizing network features and capabilities. The Parlay X JAX-WS kit available from Ericsson Mobility World Developer Program makes it even easier for developers to incorporate Parlay X into their Java applications.

Parlay X provides access to a powerful set of telecommunications functions, but is server-based and can sometimes be tricky to use. It also requires developers to learn a new programming environment.

Ericsson Mobility World's Parlay X JAX-WS kit is the link between Parlay X and JAX-WS, and allows programmers to work in a familiar Java-based environment. This is the first open standard API solution for the Parlay X web services client.

JAX-WS (Java API for XML Web Services) is the new standard for Java web services to come out of the Java Community Process, and replaces the Java API for XML-Based RPC (JAX-RPC). It will be included in the Java 6.0 release at the end of 2006, but until then, it can be used in Java 5 by installing the Java Web Services Developer Pack 2.0.

Additionally, the Parlay X JAX-WS kit uses Ant, the open-source build tool, and is therefore IDE-independent. The kit was developed using the Netbeans IDE 5.0, which can be used to open the project.

This kit allows for a quick start in Parlay X client development and understanding of Parlay X web services in Java.

Peter Yeung, chief strategist for service creation at Ericsson Mobility World Developer Program, says: "We are using the latest and greatest web-services technology for Java to enable Parlay X development. It's easy to use, so you can just concentrate on your applications."

It consists of:

  • Quick-start documentation
  • Open-example code classes per Parlay X use-case. These classes can be incorporated into applications as ready-to-use encapsulated Java classes without knowledge of the JAX-WS API or the Parlay X web-service standard
  • Use cases supported are:
    • Send SMS messages and get delivery status
    • Send SMS ringtone and logo
    • Receive SMS with start/stop notification
    • Send MMS
    • Receive MMS
    • Get terminal status and start/stop notification
  • Fully Ant-based build scripts, with one ANT task per Parlay X use-case. Additional ANT tasks are included to generate API stubs, JAR lib file, Javadoc (for the stubs) and to back up projects
  • Netbeans IDE 5.0 project support
  • JAX-WS API from the SUN JWSDP 2.0
  • WSDL files are included for Parlay X Web services quick start.
