Ericsson China has started cooperating with researchers at Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications (BUPT) to develop innovative applications to take advantage of the strengths of IMS.

Olof Lundström, head of Ericsson Research Service Layer Technologies at Ericsson China, says the cooperation so far mainly involves 10 university staff members and an informal network of students. However, his long-term ambition is to engage students more closely in the activities.

The overall goal of the cooperation, Lundström says, is to show the potential of IMS, while the short-term goal is to develop new services beneficial to the students and staff at BUPT.

The project will adopt an end-user-centric “living lab” work process, building on feedback and reactions from users, Lundström says. As the process of establishing this cooperation is still going on, Lundström does not yet know exactly which applications will be developed.

Another newly initiated activity with BUPT builds on an existing cooperation that the research team now wants to expand into the development of service-layer applications. So far, Ericsson has provided the team with the Service Development Studio (SDS) and some initial guidance.

Lundström says: “We want to help build a developer community at BUPT bustling with creativity and innovativeness, where lots of applications adapted to the Chinese market are developed.”
