Turkcell GPRSLand, a mobile applications package jointly developed by Ericsson Mobility World and Turkcell, was named Best New Service at the World Communications Awards ceremony in London, England, on September 30, 2002.

“This is how everyone should do it,” said the judges. “Turkcell has done a great job putting a package together, not just a network. They’ve really thought it through and it’s great to hear of this kind of sophistication.

”The GPRSLand service package currently consists of about 50 Mobile Internet applications and has contributed to a dramatic rise in Turkcell’s mobile data traffic since its introduction last fall. Its applications, which were developed by third-party companies that operate as business partners of Ericsson Mobility World, cover a wide range of usage categories, including games, chat, match-making, information, weather, news, and finance. Users can reach the Mobile Internet services housed in the Turkcell GPRSLand package via mobile phones that feature WAP or GPRS.

The aim of Turkcell’s GPRSLand is to create a culture for using mobile data among its customers, by allowing them to see the possibilities of communication beyond voice service. The business model provides real financial incentives for third-party developers, by allowing them to share a percentage of traffic charges and by encouraging them to create successful campaigns. The launch of GPRSLand was fully supported by an extensive advertising campaign that made it known among Turkcell customers.
