Swedish content development company Mobilehits has created a novel mobile data service. Quite simply, they track the music interests of young people by looking at what they download onto their phones as ring tones. With this information, they have an opportunity to push other music-related services and even real music to them, generating income for the entertainment industry, operators and network suppliers. Ericsson Mobility World has been key to their success.

Mobilehits CEO, Robin Rutili, says: "Ericsson has helped us to become known in the market. We've met with a lot of operators, and it's always good to have the Ericsson name behind us. It gives credibility to whatever we've developed because we can say that Ericsson has approved the quality of service. That has most definitely had an impact on our other sales opportunities."

Mobilehits is a major producer of polyphonic ring tones. Rutili says that ring tones are one of the few products on the market where money can be made. "One revenue channel is the direct content sale to a consumer. Another is the sale of a music service to another business. For example, we could run Yahoo's music site and sell mobile downloads for them on their behalf. That would be a simple download service. We’re trying to create and include as many music services as possible in what we provide them – this could be anything from news, MMS, polyphonic ring tones, reviews, whatever young consumers might be interested in."

Ericsson Mobility World and Mobilehits first made contact in September 2001. Six months later, a global sales and distribution agreement was signed where Mobilehits' applications would primarily be drivers for the infrastructure sold by Ericsson.

Jens Friberg, sales support manager at Ericsson Mobility World, says that Ericsson Mobility World considered the music industry an interesting market to investigate and saw opportunities for both companies. "Mobilehits has helped Ericsson to show our customers how our products can be used, and we have helped Mobilehits to create new business through our market channels," says Friberg.

Mobilehits produced the original ring tones embedded in some Ericsson handsets, such as the Sony Ericsson T300. Rutili says this is a value-added service so the user has something to do with the phone from day one, while generating traffic in the operator's network.

Friberg says that Mobilehits has received help from Ericsson with MMS development and cooperation with streaming for the Sony Ericsson P800 mobile phone. He says: "Mobilehits is a unique company as it straddles the music and telecom industries. It will be interesting to follow the development of this company and the mobile music industry."

The goal of Mobilehits is to create an attractive distribution platform for the music industry and to make it mobile. Rutili anticipates further business with Ericsson Mobility World, and young people look forward to hearing more services from Mobilehits.
