The Liberty Alliance Project, made up of more than 160 companies, was established in September 2001. The goal of the group is to establish an open standard for federated network identity, which addresses many of the complications in network identity management that are prevalent today.

Federated identity allows users to "link" elements of their identity between accounts without centrally storing all of their personal information.

Ericsson joined the Liberty Alliance Project as a management board member. The Liberty Alliance Project has three expert groups where specific issues are addressed. Ericsson is active in the Business and Marketing and Technology expert groups. Ericsson is currently developing digital identity products that follow the standards set by the Liberty Alliance Project.
