There are several emerging technologies for creating an enriched mobile end-user experience, such as:

  • Mobile SVG Tiny
  • SMIL
  • JSR 290
  • Mobile AJAX
  • Flash Lite

Mobile browsers that support technologies for rich mobile end-user experience, such as those mentioned in the list above, are called Rich Media Clients (RMC). Examples of such clients are mobile TV clients capable of for instance embedding the TV screen in the mobile browsing page and using JavaScript and Mobile AJAX for TV channel control and interaction.

Mobile SVG Tiny

SVG Tiny is a standard for displaying vector graphics on small, highly-restricted mobile devices. Because of the limited memory, low CPU power and limited display of mobile devices, Mobile SVG Tiny introduces constraints on content, attribute types, properties, and user-agent behavior. SVG Tiny can be used for both thick/fat clients (for instance Java ME applications) as well as for thin clients (Mobile browser), as part of an application UI.

SMIL
SMIL (Synchronized Multimedia Integration Language) enables simple authoring of interactive audiovisual presentations. SMIL is typically used for "rich media"/multimedia presentations which integrate streaming audio and video with images, text or any other media type. SMIL is based on XML syntax and many SMIL presentations are written using a simple text-editor. SMIL is used primarily for MMS. Unfortunately, few mobile browsers support SMIL.

JSR 290
JSR 290 enables Java ME applications that combine web UI mark-up technologies with Java code. The underlying concept is very similar to a Java applet for web browsers. The specification enables the creation of Java ME applications that combine the ease of authoring and graphical richness of mobile web UI technologies (such as XHTML Basic and SVG Tiny) with the capabilities of the Java ME platform.

Mobile AJAX
Mobile AJAX is a technique for creating interactive mobile applications. It is based on AJAX (Asynchronous JavaScript and XML) for the web. The intention of Mobile AJAX is to make mobile pages more responsive by exchanging small amounts of data with the server behind the scenes, so that the entire mobile page does not have to be reloaded each time the user makes a change. This    increases the interactivity, speed and usability of the pages. Mobile AJAX gives an end-user experience similar to what can be accomplished using a fat client such as a Java ME Midlet application.

Flash Lite

Flash Lite is the Flash technology specifically developed for mobile phones and consumer electronics devices. Flash Lite accelerates the delivery of rich content and browsing, as well as customized user interfaces. It gives designers and developers improved means for achieving expressiveness, efficiency and interactivity for content creation. Flash Lite is not a standardized technology but it is more of a defector standard solution.
