Ericsson Global
Testimonial: Anna September 2009
Meet Anna, Research Scientist, joined Ericsson in May 2004

Base: Jorvas (or Helsinki), Finland, I travel regularly to Sweden.

I joined Ericsson in 2004 as a summer student with the aim of doing a master's thesis here. Having studied communications technology at the Helsinki University of Technology, I wanted to work with Internet or mobile related issues. The choice of company was not so relevant to me at that time; my main goal was just to get a job in the right technology domain. However, Ericsson has turned out to be a very good choice of work place, and I am still here five years later!

Originally, I had been hoping to work in a more artistic field with perhaps web design or user interfaces, however, ending up in wireless access networks research has made me understand that one can use creativity in an engineering job as well. A visual eye is needed for presentations, and creativity is needed to be able to establish something new. The first challenge I faced at work was to get to know the technologies we work with and all the tools we use. I had studied more multimedia related technologies, but now I needed to learn radio access networks in detail. Working with research, the challenges never end; we need to learn about new technologies and new tools all the time to stay with the development.

As an employer, Ericsson provides a challenging and multicultural environment with lots of possibilities for a career. Staying in the same company does not mean doing the same job all the time, but one has the possibility to do several careers in one place, or even worldwide.

Where will I be in 5 years? I'll still be working with communications, but hopefully have a broader view of our business and the future opportunities out there!
