Ericsson’s WCDMA products for third-generation cellular systems are based on Cello, a generic platform for small- to medium-scale telecom applications. Cello has a robust, distributed, real-time telecom control system, and low-cost ATM, TDM or IP transport. The transport system is built on AMAX, an ATM switch designed especially to give a good cost- to-performance ratio. The author describes the Cello system concept—that is, the Cello platform and development environments—Cello node topology, the execution platform, and key new hardware.
