The aim of UMTS/IMT-2000 standardization is to produce a truly global standard for third-generation mobile systems. Ericsson’s WCDMA evaluation system facilitates UMTS/IMT-2000 standardization, by allowing operators and engineers to demonstrate and test third-generation services and technical solutions. It also enables them to learn about and evaluate WCDMA characteristics in ATM environments. Ericsson developed the WCDMA evaluation system to demonstrate the potential of the third-generation system, to obtain valuable field experience and input for current commercial development, and to pave the way for the evolution of second-generation systems into UMTS. The authors describe Ericsson’s WCDMA evaluation system, the technical details of the system, its background, and the wide range of end-user services it offers.
