IPv6—The new generation Internet
Now that they have the millennium bug behind them, network architects might think some relaxation is in order. But there is no rest for the weary. Indeed, we must now turn our attention to finding solutions for overcoming the limitations of IPv4. IPv6 helps network architects revisit fundamental IP-related issues such as IP address shortage, security, quality of service, mobility, multicasting, and network management. |
WAP—The catalyst of the mobile Internet
Ericsson is actively helping to shape the mobile Internet industry with enabling technologies, such as WAP, Bluetooth, EPOC, Parlay, GPRS, and UMTS, and associated products. In particular, the wireless application protocol is an early enabler with the potential both to offer and unlock value in the emerging mobile Internet industry. In fact, WAP is probably the one technology that will kick-start the new industry and open the doors of opportunity. |
The challenges of voice over IP over wireless
The main objective of the VoIPoW concept is to port voice service to the new packet-data-based platform while maintaining perceived quality-of-service and spectrum efficiency associated with present-day circuit-switched wireless systems. By introducing traffic classification and header compression we can offer a spectrum-efficient VoIPoW service with high speech quality and IP service flexibility. |
Openness in AXE
By unbundling the AXE system into a layered set of cooperating components, Ericsson can take full advantage of commercially available technology, reuse existing components (thereby reducing the time it takes to introduce new products), and separate software functions from the hardware implementation. Greater openness in AXE is thus expected to improve time to market and make it easier for operators to introduce new features that will help them to attract and retain their subscribers. |
Management solutions for IP networks
The key criterion of a successful network operator has become the ability to offer and monitor new services across the network in a cost-effective manner. To tackle the challenge of managing router networks, Ericsson is introducing new routing protocols, routing options, and carrier-class network-management tools. |
