The service network represents two major propositions for operators: on the one hand, it exists as a highly complex environment, defined by multi-vendor products and software, applications and services, and many different communication standards and protocols. This suggests that immense expertise is needed to make sense of it. On the other hand, the service network offers operators extremely rich opportunities to earn new revenues. But to realize the true potential of the service network and move toward third-generation-ready networks, the operator must fully understand the technical complexity and business issues involved. The authors explain how systems integration provides operators with the means of evolving and realizing their service networks
