Ericsson Review

In case you have been wondering or are concerned, let me assure you, Ericsson Reviewis alive and well. As with everyone else at Ericsson, however, we have been forced to make some tough choices, doing our part to find ways of cutting costs and putting the company back on track toward profitability. At different times throughout the years Ericsson Reviewhas been published in English, French, Russian, Spanish, and Swedish. During most of its lifetime, the journal has been a quarterly publication. Cost constraints led us to discontinue the Spanishlanguage version in 2001 and to cut production to three issues per year in 2002. And this past spring, the decision was made to permanently cut the number of issues to two per year. This decision does not automatically imply that we will publish fewer articles—if the need is great enough, we can easily stuff more articles into an issue—but it does go a long way toward lowering our costs, the biggest of which are printing and distribution.

We know that we have not been alone in facing tough decisions. The economic downturn in our industry has had a widespread sobering and humbling effect. Gone are the days when we can revel in technology for technology's sake. Today, we must be able to trace some element of all that we do to the economic bottom line. Notwithstanding, Ericsson still is, and will continue to be, a visionary, pioneering entity, albeit with a healthy sense of pragmatism guiding its footsteps.

From 1924 to the present, Ericsson Review has been reporting on (a) the technology that makes up the research and development activities at Ericsson, and (b) the resultant products, services and solutions. The objective has been to help readers identify trends, understand new technology, and to show them how products, services and solutions from Ericsson will benefit them. Looking forward, our mission remains: Ericsson Review will continue to publish and distribute interesting and pertinent articles in a paper journal and via our website at www.ericsson.com/review.
