Profile: Three questions for Jonas Sundborg

Jonas Sundborg

Jonas Sundborg, at Group Function Technology & Portfolio Management, Standardization, was recently appointed Vice Chairman of the Board of the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI).

1What does this appointment mean for Ericsson? It is strategically important for Ericsson to have representatives in leading positions in standardization bodies like ETSI in order to maintain Ericsson’s leadership in standardization. Also, being involved and influencing priorities and decisions in this area gives us a competitive edge. In addition, this appointment is important because ETSI is the largest member of 3GPP, which is the collaborative body that defines the global standard for future mobile broadband.

2What are you working on right now? At present the organization is evaluating the direction that ETSI’s activities should take in the coming 10 years. Examples of some of the new-growth areas we are working with include collaborative services, machine-to-machine communication, energy efficiency, and intelligent transport systems.

3Why were you chosen for the job? I am seen as being diplomatic, competent and reliable while at the same time knowing what I want. There are many different cultures and personalities represented at ETSI, so one needs to be able to balance these, have a good network of contacts, and build productive partnerships.
