When there is a human need to communicate Ericsson is there
February 2001
El Salvador was devastated by several major earthquakes and more than 4500 aftershocks:
In response to the earthquake on 13 January in El Salvador, Ericsson immediately dispatched a team of Ericsson Response volunteers (ERV's): Carlos Andrés Urrutia from Guatemala; Carlos José Reggioni from Costa Rica; and Edgar Lopez from El Salvador. Ericsson worked with local network operators to repair and restore the damaged communication networks. They contacted the Red Cross to find out what kind of material was needed and what Ericsson could contribute.
Ericsson in El Salvador donated mobile phones to Red Cross relief workers and to the Swedish Rescue Services Agency (Svenska Räddningssverket). They rented trucks and secured the use of a helicopter for an air assessment and donated spades and hatchets. Ericsson employees not trained as ERV's contributed to the relief efforts. They packed 150 food and survival kits and distributed them on the Saturday after the first earthquake. Each packet contains rations that would support one family of five for a month.
