When there is a human need to communicate Ericsson is there
Assisting Beirut relief operations - Lebanon military conflict, August 2006
Description

In August 2006 Ericsson helped Télécoms Sans Frontières establish relief operations in Lebanon, a country ravaged by a military conflict between Israel and Hezbollah guerillas.

Volunteers with Télécoms Sans Frontières (TSF), a France-based relief organization, were in Lebanon to provide emergency telecommunications services with the help of satellite data transmitters and other equipment. Bomb attacks during the conflict destroyed much of the telecom infrastructure in southern Lebanon. This made it very difficult for residents to communicate with their families and to rebuild their communities.

Ericsson has had a presence in Beirut for more than half a century and its office there is staffed by people who know the local language and culture. Ericsson helped in many ways that proved invaluable to TSF during the initial relief operation.

Ericsson's role
  • Hans Severin, Ericsson's country manager for Lebanon and Syria, invited TSF volunteers to use Ericsson's office space in central Beirut, where they had access to phone and internet services. Ericsson's office remained open and functional at a time when many other foreign companies were closing down and moving workers out of the country.
  • Ericsson also helped TSF with accommodation at a hotel near its office.
Ericsson's partners
  • Télécoms Sans Frontières, a relief organization based in Pau, France, that provides emergency telecommunications services.
