Program description
Where there is a human need to communicate Ericsson is there

We believe that there should be a faster and more effective response to disasters. Ericsson Response is a global initiative aimed at responding to human suffering caused by disasters. The initiative formalizes Ericsson's commitment to the issue based on its previous involvement and experience in various disaster response efforts throughout the world.

The core parts in the Ericsson Response program are:

  • Ericsson Response volunteers and equipment
  • Research and Development
  • Partnership with relief organizations and the private sector
  • Awareness
Why disaster response?

Throughout Ericsson's 125-year history, the company has been involved in numerous disaster response efforts. We have provided mobile communication to refugee camps during the Kosovo crisis, reinstalling damaged telecom equipment and provided tents to earthquake victims in Turkey, as well as phones to flood victims in Vietnam.

In recent years, disasters have increased in severity and scope and we want to do our part. Through communications aid, expertise and our position as a global company, we can support faster and more coordinated approaches to disaster response efforts.

Ericsson is in partnership with the the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), UNIcef, World Food Programme (WFP) and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) developing disaster preparedness programs around the world.
Ericsson is also partnering with the private sector. Several companies are interested and Ericsson encourage dialogue with local customers or other companies that could bring important elements to the program.

What we do

The Ericsson Response program consists of three parts; action, research and awareness:

Action

  • To provide rapid deployment of communications solutions encompassing Ericsson technologies and skills to support and respond to the unique communication challenges of each disaster.

  • An Ericsson Response Unit consists of equipment and the people to implement and operate it.

  • An Ericsson Response Volunteer program to present opportunities for our employees to become involved in our response efforts.
The volunteers will be used in three different modes:

1. Assessments. These are the first on the ground teams that will estimate damages and losses and propose resources and organization required for the relief operation.

2. Relief workers. The volunteers will work together with IFRC and different UN relief organizations at the disaster site.

3. Ericsson teams. Teams of Ericsson volunteers will install and operate equipment at disaster sites. As for example a mobile cellular systems or IT networks.
