July 26, 2004

The Stockholm Challenge Award - the world's most extensive prize for ICT projects with social and economical impact and sustainability- has been handed out by the City of Stockholm on a yearly basis since 1999. Being a success, the Stockholm Challenge has over the years turned into a global initiative fighting to bridge the digital divide, with more than 2500 IT projects participating from all over the world.
The City of Stockholm has offered the IT University/KTH in Kista to become the new host and owner of the Stockholm Challenge Award. The change of ownership took place after the awards event in Stockholm City Hall in May. Ericsson Response has signed an agreement with KTH/IT University for partnership in the Stockholm Challenge program. Other partners of the event are the City of Stockholm and SIDA - the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency.
The Stockholm Challenge Award (SCA) will in the future continue to demonstrate how information technology can improve living conditions and increase economic growth. The objective is to help local entrepreneurs, who work to close the digital divide, by bringing in research communities, developing organizations and strong corporate initiatives.
This years' winning projects in 10 different categories came from Mexico, United States, Singapore, Egypt, Spain, South Africa, China, New Zealand, Botswana and Samoa, regarding for instance areas of citizen portals, tele-health, e-business for handicraftsmen and environmental information networks.
The next awards will be handed out in 2006, with special focus on projects in countries and regions with the greatest needs. In addition there will be a conference held every year on issues related to the role of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in global development work.

Jeannette Jarmlinger, Ericsson Response, thinks this can be a big opportunity for Ericsson worldwide local companies getting an opportunity to take an active role in developing and conducting local challenges in the future connected to the SCA program.
