Our perspective
Full Service Broadband
Any service anywhere on any screen

For Ericsson, full service broadband means any service anywhere on any screen. Users want rich content and fast access to information, not only on the desktop but everywhere on any device. Mobility is thus an essential ingredient in the broadband experience.

Achieving this requires true convergence of the fixed and mobile networks in an all-IP network and a transformation of both the business and the network that will bring operators and suppliers closer together.

Meeting the challenges

Ericsson has identified five key challenges that operators must address in delivering full-service broadband:

  • Service convenience
  • Mobile broadband
  • High-performance broadband
  • Business and network transformation
  • Network convergence

Service convenience

Devices may range from high-definition television (HDTV) to mobile phones and portable gaming consoles. A key element in Ericsson's approach to making Full Service Broadband easy for users is the development of an open IMS (IP Multimedia Subsystem). The IMS not only creates a multi-service, multi-access network. It provides such important user benefits as single sign-on and the highest levels of security and service quality.

For you as an operator, this means that new services can be launched quickly and profitably. Customer loyalty is strengthened, and revenues will be maximized.

Mobile Broadband

People want rich entertainment and a growing number of services on their mobile phones and other handheld devices.

Today, Ericsson can deliver the required HSPA (High-Speed Packet Access) as a software upgrade to existing WCDMA assets. Radio performance is also superior, providing market-leading data speeds, capacity and coverage that allow voice and data to be mixed on a single carrier for a mobile broadband launch.

The new data-intensive services drive revenue growth, while WCDMA/HSPA promotes cost efficiency by sharing CapEx and OpEx across multiple services.

High-performance broadband

Demand for bandwidth in the home, at the office and on the move is insatiable. HDTVs, game consoles, digital cameras, Internet searches, online music and videos keep driving demand for ever-greater performance.

Today's triple play (voice, broadband and TV) is not enough. Mobile broadband and the need for speed are creating a whole new ball game. Tomorrow's Full Service Broadband will need the VDSL (Very high-speed Digital Subscriber Line) copper-based access solutions and IP-based fiber solutions that Ericsson is able to deliver today.

Business and network transformation

Ericsson is well positioned to take on the role as prime integrator for Full Service Broadband. As an industry leader in transforming the network and defining the new infrastructure, Ericsson is uniquely positioned for managing the complexities in bringing new services to market and driving operational excellence.

With Ericsson as the prime supplier, you as on operators can devote more time to customer care. By listening to customers instead of exploring the complexities of broadband technology, operators will be more able to identify the services that users want and thus transform their business.

Network convergence

Put simply, network convergence is about merging fixed and mobile networks and bringing telecom quality to an all-IP multi-service, multi-access network. Providing all services over a single network with multiple access points not only means shorter time to market for new services and greater scalability across multiple access networks. It also results in lower OpEx and TCO for operators, while delivering a richer end-user experience.

Ericsson offers a complete transport solution that includes both optical and microwave equipment for the most cost-effective evolution toward a converged Ethernet/IP network. Ericsson's packet core network is the industry's only IP network designed and verified to meet the requirements for all telecom and broadband services for fixed and mobile networks. The mobile packet core supports not only WCDMA and GSM, but also WLAN and WiMAX access for efficient multi-access capability.
