Ericsson has started delivering the U350 and U360 mobile platforms - the smallest and most powerful 3.6Mbit/s HSDPA platforms available for true mass-market deployment. Using these platforms, handset manufactures will be able to integrate HSDPA capabilities in mass-market mobile phones. The U350 is a quad-band EDGE and single-band HSDPA platform, while the U360 adds triple-band HSDPA capabilities, which can be programmed in several combinations required to address different markets in Europe, Japan and USA (Press release).
Vodafone Group has selected Ericsson as a preferred supplier of IMS solutions. Vodafone is implementing IMS to pilot a range of next-generation communications services. Ericsson will supply its IMS system, as well as support and integration services, in support of Vodafone's step-by-step evolution to an all-IP network (Press release).
Vodafone Group has named Ericsson as its Network Supplier of the Year, as a result of "an efficient cooperation, being first to deliver HSDPA and an overall strong engagement with the Vodafone Group". The award was presented at Vodafone's inaugural Global Supplier Conference in March 2006 (Press release).
The health of the WCDMA market is testament to industry efforts to ensure openness and interoperability. The scale of the WCDMA market has meant well-funded R&D programs with a large pool of technical expertise, with economies in manufacturing, supply and logistics.
Moving forward
Perhaps WCDMA’s best hand is its ability to keep growing as a technology, to offer ever-improving mobile broadband service capabilities.
The most immediate of these developments is High Speed Packet Access (HSPA). The downlink version, HSDPA, is currently being deployed globally and will soon be followed by its uplink HSPA sibling, EUL (enhanced uplink), or HSUPA. HSDPA offers unprecedented mobile download speeds – up to 14.4Mbit/s – and short response times for users, as well as more than double the system capacity for mobile operators (compared with previous Release 99-only capacity). HSPA will continue to evolve, for example with even higher-order modulation schemes and MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Output) functionality enabling peak bit-rates above 40Mbit/s per 5MHz carrier.
The advanced and growing capabilities of WCDMA, in combination with its global adoption, make it the most attractive technology choice for mobile operators who want to deploy services beyond voice. These capabilities are now on a par with those currently offered by wireline DSL – with the complementary advantage of true global mobility. In this way, WCDMA/HSPA enables mass-market mobile broadband services such as mobile e-mail, on-line music, high-speed Internet access, true mobile office and mobile TV anywhere. Unlike competing mobile TV technologies, WCDMA/HSPA does not require operators to build new, separate networks to start offering broadcast and interactive mobile TV services.
Large numbers of Ericsson customers will introduce HSPA during 2006: more than ten commercial HSDPA deployments using Ericsson software and hardware are already under way in Europe alone.
WCDMA with HSPA provides an ideal access platform for services based on IMS and, ultimately, all-IP. A multitude of consumer and enterprise mobile multimedia services will be enabled by this combination.
Ericsson’s technology leadership in WCDMA is illustrated by its latest generation of WCDMA base stations, which allows for 30 per cent fewer sites, increases capacity by up to 150 per cent, and enhances power efficiency (cutting power consumption by up to 55 per cent). This most cost-effective RBS3000 node provides mobile data throughput more than 400GB per day – resulting in a broadband radio network that costs less than one euro per gigabyte.
New opening for CDMA operators
As well as offering GSM operators a well-defined path to the future, WCDMA is now being seen as an attractive evolution option for CDMA operators. As these operators consider their next technology step, they recognize the secure development path, enhanced revenue opportunities, lower total cost of ownership and global support that come with the economies of scale offered by a truly global standard like GSM/WCDMA.
Ericsson has developed a program that enables operators to evolve from TDMA, GSM and CDMA to WCDMA in a highly cost-effective, risk-free way, which reuses as much of the existing infrastructure as possible. More than 70 operators, across all technologies, have already benefited from Ericsson’s experience in such ‘change-out’ projects. Return on investment can be achieved in just a few years.
Many network operators have successfully run – and still are running – multiple network standards in parallel for as long as it takes to get subscribers to migrate, and to ensure there is sufficient coverage and capacity during the migration.
As 3G mobile services enter a new phase of growth and development, Ericsson is well placed to help operators succeed in what is a new telecom ecosystem, with new players and new partnerships emerging quickly. The company is positioned to build on its technology and market leadership – with 40 per cent share of the GSM/WCDMA market – and help operators offer new mobile broadband services to new and existing customers.
The capabilities of 3G mobile networks are advancing rapidly, and for advanced mobile services to achieve mass-market success it is vital that mobile devices are considered as part of the end-to-end solution. Above all, it is imperative that mobile devices offer the interoperability and stability that operators and users need.
Handset manufacturers and other industry players are tapping into expertise offered by Ericsson Mobile Platforms to ensure that services and applications offer the best user experience through complete, end-to-end interoperability-tested platforms across 2.5G and 3G. The company's common software platform for GSM/GPRS, EDGE and WCDMA devices ensures application portability, stability, security and state-of-the-art power consumption and size.
Ericsson Mobile Platforms made several significant announcements over the past quarter:
Vodafone Group has named Ericsson as its Network Supplier of the Year, as a result of "an efficient cooperation, being first to deliver HSDPA and an overall strong engagement with the Vodafone Group". The award was presented at Vodafone's inaugural Global Supplier Conference in March 2006 (Press release).
Ericsson has successfully trialed mobile broadcast technology for distribution of multimedia services such as mobile TV over 3G networks. The trial, performed in Stockholm, Sweden, was the first live use of Multimedia Broadcast Multicast Service (MBMS) (Press release).
At this year's MIPTV/Milia TV and broadcasting event in Cannes, France, Ericsson showed how TV and on-demand mobile TV services can be integrated in one location in one device. Ericsson demonstrated how a wide range of TV and on-demand programs can be well structured and easily accessed in one location on the mobile. Users can easily access stored content for playback, making the mobile TV service even more attractive and personal (Press release).
Vodafone Czech Republic has selected Ericsson to build a 3G transmission and core network, including its market-leading mobile softswitch solution. The core network will be completed by the end of June 2006; the new 3G network will enable Vodafone Czech Republic to introduce a wide range of new multimedia services (Press release).
The world's first live trial of interactive mobile TV, conducted by Ericsson and the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation (NRK), has doubled the average time viewers watch the mobile TV service. The nine-week trial showed that users of interactive TV watched for an average of five minutes each session - double the regular mobile TV viewing time (Press release).

"If GSM was the beginning of a mass market for mobile telephony, HSPA marks the beginning of a mass market for high-speed mobile broadband" - so said Ericsson President and CEO Carl-Henric Svanberg at 3GSM World Congress in Barcelona, Spain. While HSPA (High Speed Packet Access) is a cutting-edge technology, it already has the global presence and necessary economies of scale to help unlock a mobile broadband mass market with steady growth. And it offers a future-proof evolution path, with the standardization of 'Super 3G' - or 3G LTE (Long Term Evolution) - already under way.
Most 3G networks are being upgraded to HSPA during 2006, and Ericsson has established a clear lead in the field: the majority of HSPA networks rolled out today are powered by Ericsson.
Ericsson made several HSPA-related announcements during the quarter:
The latest family of WCDMA radio base stations, RBS 3000, is designed for the cost-competitive introduction of high-speed mobile broadband services. The new base stations allow for 30 fewer sites, increase capacity by up to 150 per cent and cut power consumption by up to 55 per cent (Press release).
Improved integration means the new RBS 3000 is half the size of its predecessors, opening up the possibility of cost-effective multi-access radio base stations. These enable operators to combine GSM and WCDMA in the same footprint - reducing the cost of radio network roll-out and operation. The lower total cost of ownership of the new base stations means operators can address subscribers at monthly revenues as low as two US dollars (Press release).
GSM has cemented its position as the world's favorite mobile technology, with approaching 80 per cent of the world's mobile subscribers now connected to the GSM/EDGE/WCDMA family. Thanks to massive economies of scale, GSM operators are also benefiting from the most advanced and well-funded R&D programs for enhancing the capacity and capabilities of GSM networks cost-effectively.
The continuing development of GSM was highlighted by several announcements made by Ericsson during the quarter:
Ericsson has introduced an integrated broadband network portfolio that combines Ericsson's and Marconi's long-standing expertise and product ranges in broadband access and transport networks to facilitate operators' transition to high-performance broadband networks. The integrated portfolio enables Ericsson to offer an end-to-end range of infrastructure solutions and services to operators looking to deploy all-IP networks.
The new broadband network portfolio includes: broadband access solutions such as IP-DSLAMs; IP Multi-Service Access Nodes (IP-MSANs); microwave and optical transport; and Ericsson's IMS and softswitch solutions (Press release).
Ericsson has signed its longest-ever technology contract with New Zealand Police to help it build its own nationwide internal communication network. Maxis, Malaysia's leading telecoms operator, has selected Ericsson's Telephony Softswitch solution as part of its ongoing wireline network modernization. Ericsson will deploy a new international gateway switch and upgrade an existing switch, as well as provide operations and maintenance support for five years (Press release).
Ericsson has signed an agreement with Türk Telekom, Turkey's largest wireline operator, for the provision of MINI-LINK microwave transmission systems and services. The Ericsson solution will support Türk Telekom's roll-out of high-performance broadband services, especially in rural areas (Press release).
United Arab Emirates operator Etisalat has selected Ericsson to help it migrate its international switching layer to an IP-based solution. Under the agreement, Ericsson will deliver, implement and integrate Telephony Softswitches, Media Gateways and Operations Support System (OSS) for efficient management of the evolved network (Press release).
As telecom technology, services and business relationships grow ever more complex, service providers are looking for partners that can offer them a single point of contact and take responsibility for delivering a seamless and convenient end-user experience. Two leading operators took the time at 3GSM World Congress to explain what they look for in such a strategic partnership.
Sergio Cozzolino, vice president of Telecom Italia's Innovative Services Department, put it this way: "Key strategic partnerships, including those with systems integrators of networks and service platforms, are vital to us. What we look for in business partners like Ericsson is flexibility, financial strength, technology leadership, and an understanding of our business and ways of working."
According to Eduardo Duato, CTO at Spanish mobile operator Amena, "[We value] Ericsson's outstanding local competence in handling complex integration projects and making sure the end-to-end solution works."
Ericsson has the telecom industry's most comprehensive managed services offerings, ranging from designing, building, operating and managing day-to-day operations of a customer's network, through hosting service applications and enablers, to providing network capacity and coverage on demand. Ericsson has officially announced more than 80 managed services contracts with operators worldwide since 2002. In all its current managed services contracts, excluding hosting, Ericsson is managing networks that together serve more than 60 million subscribers.
Service hosting continued to be a strong area for Ericsson in the quarter, with a number of important announcements:
Ericsson has been selected as exclusive managed services partner by Vodafone Netherlands for the management of the access parts of its GSM, GPRS and WCDMA radio networks. Under the five-year contract, Ericsson will be responsible for engineering, implementation and operation of the radio access networks (Press release).

This is the first managed services agreement Ericsson has signed in Greater China, and fifth with the Hutchison Whampoa Group - adding Hong Kong to the successful joint operations in Australia, Italy, Scandinavia and the UK (Press release).
Ericsson has been selected by Italy's second-largest electricity distributor Acea to manage and develop its Automated Meter Reading (AMR) system. The new AMR system will initially be deployed to 1.5 million homes in Rome. It will collect meter readings and other management and control data from homes through electrical power lines via concentrators, which will in turn be linked via GPRS modules to the service center managed by Ericsson - where integration will be performed with Acea's billing, network management and customer care systems (Press release).
The new Ericsson Mobility Gateway enables enterprises to turn their existing PBX solution into an integrated mobile communications solution for their entire mobile workforce. By bringing mobile telephony under corporate control and reducing the number of communications devices needed per employee, Ericsson Mobility Gateway delivers significant long-term cost-savings as high as 30 per cent (Press release).
Italian mobile operator 3 Italia has chosen Ericsson to provide its customers with Ericsson Mobile Organizer (EMO) mobile push e-mail and Personal Information Management (PIM) services. Ericsson's hosted solution will enable 3 Italia to offer its customers access to both corporate and private e-mail, as well as other PIM data while on the move (Press release).
