Viewpoint - revenue management goes real-time

Around the world, telecom operators are at various stages of evolution to all-IP networks, opening up new opportunities for value-added services. A key challenge in this evolution is to create new pricing and business models that will attract customers and media and content partners. Above all, pricing must be fair and clear, while revenue must be properly secured and distributed. Revenue management based on real-time charging is the only secure way for operators to control credit and to enable users to manage their spending.

Essentially, revenue management encompasses three key aspects of telecoms business: payment, partners and pricing.

In the payment area, revenue management needs to support the handling of retail issues such as giving users flexibility and control, as well as wholesale issues such as managing risk with service providers and getting paid by (and paying) partners. One key point is that the payment method (whether prepaid or postpaid) should not define the service offering – users should be able to pay for the services they choose in the way that suits them best. What’s more, most transactions should be handled in real time to support user control and assure revenue for the operator and its partners.

When it comes to partnerships, revenue management must handle issues such as roaming, interconnect and content partner relations. It needs to cover things like partnership agreements, the business model, revenue sharing and settlement.

For pricing, revenue management solutions need to help operators identify the most profitable and attractive pricing and packaging of services. They must be able to charge on the basis of content, location, subscription, volume airtime and quality, with options for things like package pricing, cross-service discounting, special promotions, and loyalty and bonus schemes.

Delivering such revenue management capabilities demands end-to-end integrated solutions that traverse traditional service and departmental boundaries. Another challenge for operators is to evolve from the multitude of service-specific billing and customer care systems and processes to a converged revenue management architecture that can cope with rapidly evolving needs across all services and segments – faster, cheaper, better, and with less complexity.

Convergent charging and billing

The simple segmentation of subscribers into prepaid and postpaid is no longer valid, nor is it economically justifiable to have two completely separate systems for users who simply have differing payment methods. As with many other mature industries, telecom operators can use standardized business support systems to improve customer management, enhance cost-efficiency and avoid duplication of data and functionality.

Creating one convergent charging and billing solution that can handle revenue management for all users and services in the same way will be an evolutionary process. Operator-specific requirements need to be taken into account and existing investments reused in the best way.

The solution must be able to handle all telecom-specific functions such as rating, subscriber account balance, mediation and session supervision in real time. Generic functions such as invoicing and bill production will be most efficiently handled by standard functions in business support systems.

Ericsson in revenue management

Ericsson’s revenue management solutions cover all aspects of business-to-consumer (B2C) and business-to-business (B2B) services. They are designed to deliver competitive advantage for our customers by improving marketing capabilities, cost-efficiency and financial risk management. They also provide spending and credit control for all subscribers – whether consumer or corporate.

Ericsson’s revenue management offering includes solutions for convergent charging and billing, wholesale charging and billing, prepaid, payments, adjunct rating and promotions, mediation and revenue assurance. These solutions are backed by services including business consulting, systems integration and worldwide support – all designed to optimize end-to-end revenue management business processes and ensure cost-efficient operations.

Ericsson’s real-time charging solutions are the most widely deployed in telecom networks worldwide – catering for more than 300 million subscribers at 115 operators. With more than 280 customers with Ericsson Multi Mediation and more than 45 online mediation contracts, the company is also the leading supplier of convergent online, event and file mediation solutions.

Ericsson has six fully convergent charging and billing contracts, with three of these solutions in live operation. For example, Digicel is using the solution in its operations in Haiti and Trinidad & Tobago. More than 15 operators are also basing their convergent offerings on an Ericsson charging solution, even though they have not yet gone for a fully converged solution for all users and all services.

Real-time community benefits

One service provider that has seen real business benefits arising from the implementation of real-time charging is Turkish mobile operator Turkcell. The operator is the first in the world to realize real-time community charging for both prepaid and postpaid users, using a solution from Ericsson.

So far, Turkcell has launched two new community services based on the new charging solution: one for students, and one for state employees. Users belonging to a community benefit from heavily discounted prices on calling and text messaging within the community.

Gulsun Uluer, Project Manager & Business Analyst, Charging Solutions at Turkcell said, “Making community offerings available to all our customers – whether prepaid or postpaid – is helping us attract new subscribers, raise usage and increase customer loyalty.”

Rather than being charged in full for mobile services, and then reimbursed once their monthly invoices have been worked out, subscribers who have signed up to Turkcell’s community services can enjoy discounted rates at the time they actually use the services.

“We have seen an increase in user satisfaction since we started to charge all our community members in real time,” continued Uluer. “Users are only charged at the discounted rate, and we are able to confirm community discounts to users in real time.”

Turkcell has also seen a growing numbers of subscribers being pulled in through personal recommendation by friends and colleagues.

“Handling all community charging in real time with a standardized solution has helped us to reduce time to market,” added Uluer.

Ericsson is working with its operator customers to make real-time charging more cost-efficient to implement. For example, Warid Telecom in Pakistan was the first operator to implement Ericsson’s new end-to-end solution for real-time charging of voice and SMS services. In this solution the Mobile Softswitch (MSS) or Mobile Switching Center (MSC) communicates directly with Ericsson Charging System without invoking IN – freeing up capacity in the MSS and MSC that can be used for switching traffic instead.

Convergent handling of the end-to-end revenue management processes is vital to the success of future telecom operator business, both in relation to subscribers and business partners. It delivers significant competitive advantage in areas such as marketing, cost-efficiency and financial risk management.

Leading the charge in 2006
So far this year, Ericsson has secured several new revenue management contracts:
  • 53 new Multi Mediation contracts (nine for online mediation)<
  • 39 Multi Mediation upgrade contracts
  • 30 new contracts for Ericsson Charging System 3.0
  • 16 contracts for upgrade to Ericsson Charging System 3.0
  • 4 new contracts for real-time charging solutions for VPN
  • 3 new contracts for roaming billing solutions
  • 2 new contracts for convergent charging and billing solutions
  • 2 new contracts for adjunct rating and promotions solutions.

Mobile networks

World’s mobile operators moving to HSPA

As mobile operators see growing demand for mobile broadband and multimedia services, they are moving to upgrade their WCDMA networks to HSPA (High-Speed Packet Access) - the first step on the evolution path of WCDMA. It enables operators to introduce attractive new services as mobile broadband with interactive TV, mobile music, gaming, high-speed Internet connectivity, office applications and fixed wireless services.

Through convergence and increased broadband capabilities, the mobility-driven telecom world and the PC-centric world will gradually merge and the broadband Internet will become available to billions.

The market potential for mobile broadband services is growing quickly in high-growth markets where mobile coverage and penetration developed fast and where basic data services such as SMS already play a vital role. Mobile broadband is often the only way to access broadband services and the Internet in markets with limited fixed-line alternatives. Consequently, the focus on high-speed mobile networks is also increasing among operators in these markets.

Ericsson's HSPA solution offers ADSL-like peak downlink data rates of up to 3.6Mbit/s today, and up to 14.4Mbit/s later this year. Ericsson is the primary supplier of more than half of all commercially launched WCDMA networks and of the world's first commercial HSPA networks (for the downlink, HSDPA). Ericsson expects the first commercial launches of HSPA for the uplink (HSUPA) in early 2007.

All WCDMA networks are expected to be upgraded to HSPA. Out of a total of 109 commercially-launched WCDMA networks, Ericsson is a supplier to 60. Ericsson is already powering 30 commercially-launched HSPA networks.

Softswitch enables continued GSM growth

The continuing growth in both subscriber numbers and traffic is driving the need for additional capacity in GSM networks around the world. Softswitch solutions enable operators to introduce high-quality services quickly and cost-efficiently, while providing a low-risk evolution of existing circuit-switched networks to a telecom-quality, IP multimedia service platform.

Ericsson softswitch solutions have been designed to enable operators to utilize network resources for next-generation services in the most cost-efficient way, while continuing to profit from classic voice services. More than 85 fixed and mobile operators worldwide have launched commercial services based on Ericsson softswitch solutions.
