Ericsson successfully demonstrates world’s first automated GMPLS control of Carrier Ethernet Transport network

September 25, 2007

Ericsson (NASDAQ: ERIC) successfully demonstrated the world's first automated GMPLS (Generalized Multi-Protocol Label Switching) control of a Carrier Ethernet Transport network at Carrier Ethernet World Congress (CEWC) 2007 in Geneva today. The GMPLS control scheme, already used by Ericsson for SDH products, has now been adapted to control Ethernet networks.

Broadband data traffic is growing exponentially in networks around the world. At the present rate of traffic growth, operators cannot afford to build network capacity based on the previous circuit-oriented transport paradigm. Instead, packet-based transport technologies, such as Ethernet, are seen as ideally suited for carrying this rapidly growing data traffic.

Ubiquitous Ethernet technology is ready for use in high-capacity networks, delivering carrier-class services simply and at low cost. Today, Ericsson is first to demonstrate how to drive down operational expenditures by using automated GMPLS control of Carrier Ethernet Transport networks based on PBB-TE (Provider Backbone Bridge - Traffic Engineering).

Andrea Spaccapietra, Head of the Broadband Networks product area at Ericsson, says: "The successful demonstration of GMPLS control of Ethernet networks is a vital step in bringing carrier-class operational characteristics to packet networks. Through these developments, Ericsson is enhancing the bandwidth and flexibility of packet networking, with the stability and ease of ownership required to deliver the Full Service Broadband networks of today and tomorrow."

Ericsson is shaping the future of Mobile and Broadband Internet communications through its continuous technology leadership. Providing innovative solutions in more than 140 countries, Ericsson is helping to create the most powerful communication companies in the world.
