Under the theme of “Driving Innovation in Mobile Broadband and Open Applications,” the conference will address advances in technology that will create business opportunities from the convergence of mobility, telecom networks and the Internet. Attendance to the Ericsson Mobility Summit is by invitation only.
A featured panel on “Mobility + Broadband: How Can Silicon Valley Make Money?” will include executives from Rutberg & Company, AT&T, Sequoia Capital and Ericsson. It will address the opportunities that a high-speed mobile environment presents to innovative applications and technology companies. The panel will also examine which mobile Internet applications and devices are emerging, which business models will succeed and how to create shareholder value for both incumbents and startups.
“Ericsson’s decision earlier this year to commit to a significant R&D presence in Silicon Valley was based on the desire to work more closely with the world’s leading IP technology companies as mobile and Internet technologies and business models converge,” said Bert Nordberg, Executive Vice President, Ericsson Group in San Jose. “Ericsson brings global leadership in mobility and the understanding of broadband and IP from a carrier perspective. By working with fellow technology ecosystem partners, we plan to place the United States at the forefront of next generation mobile broadband networks.”
Subscriptions to and usage of mobile broadband services are growing exponentially. Today there are some 270 million mobile broadband users in the world, a number expected to reach 1 billion by 2011, when there will be more mobile broadband than fixed broadband subscriptions. According to the Cellular Telephone Industry Association (CTIA), mobile data usage in the United States has grown 42.5 percent for the 12-month period ending June 2008.
With the release of the 700 MHz spectrum, the United States has the opportunity to develop the mobile broadband market further. As US operators deploy long-term evolution (LTE) mobile broadband technology over the next few years, Silicon Valley will play an even greater role in this market.
"We stand on the brink of a mobile broadband revolution,” said Kris Rinne, Senior Vice President, Architecture and Planning at AT&T. “It’s key that the United States continues to play a leading role in research and development for telecommunications. AT&T is committed to introducing the latest emerging devices and embedded modules, and to deploying next-generation wireless broadband platforms such as High Speed Packet Access Plus (HSPA+) and LTE.”
Ericsson’s Summit will also feature live demonstrations of next-generation network services and applications including:
- 3G and LTE (Long Term Evolution) technology -Application demonstrations, backhaul access, network infrastructure hardware and energy saving solutions.
- Fixed Broadband - Optical network infrastructure and new multi-service router capabilities.
- IPTV Solutions - The latest middleware solutions, future combinational services, encoding technology and metadata delivery services.
- Open applications - show authentication and rapid application development solutions for consumer.
- Device Ecosystem – Devices with Ericsson embedded modules and home wireless routers based on Ericsson Mobile Platform technology.
