Ericsson honored with second consecutive innovation award from Internet Telephony TMC labs

INTERNET TELEPHONY’s Technology Marketing Corporation (TMC) named Ericsson’s SM 480 Metro Ethernet platform as a 2009 TMC Labs Innovation Award winner. This is the second year in a row that Ericsson has been recognized with this honor. In 2008, Ericsson won the award for its SmartEdge 1200 multi-service edge router.

The TMC Labs Innovation Award honors products that display innovation, unique features, and significant contributions toward improving communications technology. The TMC Labs Innovation Awards are granted to those companies demonstrating ground-breaking contributions to the industry. The SM 480 was selected for its innovation in enabling service providers to accelerate the convergence of fixed and mobile networks.

The SM 480 Metro-Ethernet Service Transport is designed to simplify network architectures, lower network costs, and unify fixed and mobile networks. It delivers a combination of large-scale IP/MPLS transport and granular service level agreement, allowing service providers to leverage the network economics of Carrier Ethernet while migrating to a packet-based infrastructure.  With Ethernet-optimized hardware, the SM 480 leverages the proven capabilities of the SmartEdge Operating System (SEOS) to enable highly scalable and resilient Ethernet services. The SM 480 is managed by Ericsson’s new NetOp Network Service Manager (NSM).

“Ericsson has proven its commitment to quality and the further development of the IP communications industry through the SM 480,” said Tom Keating, CTO and TMC Labs Editorial Director. “The Innovation Award exemplifies the best and the most unique products and services that this industry has to offer. Congratulations to Ericsson for earning this great honor. I look forward to seeing more innovative solutions from them as they continue to contribute to the future of IP communications.”

In a recent report by Current Analysis, Glen Hunt, principal analyst, carrier infrastructure, states, “Ericsson’s SM 480 is threatening in the carrier Ethernet service router market segment because it addresses the needs of service providers as they build out service-rich, large-scale metro Ethernet access and aggregation networks, which require cost-effective Ethernet aggregation and a rich set of Layer 2 services to support residential, business, and mobile services.”

The SM 480 leads the industry in lowest power consumption. In recent tests by Iometrix, a well-known network testing authority, the SM 480 delivered 5.375 miliwatts per circuit per Virtual Leased Line for up to 256,000 subscribers. This is a power savings of 72 to 77 percent per circuit compared to publicly available data from competitors. The new metrics are the latest sustainability effort from Ericsson, which in 2008 committed to providing up to a 40 percent reduction in carbon emissions per subscriber across its product portfolio within five years.
