At the Broadband World Forum in Paris, Ericsson was awarded the International Engineering Consortium InfoVision Award 2009 for its EDA 1200 Converged Solution for FTTH and Mobile Backhaul.
September 7, 2009
Awarded in the category “Wireless Broadband”, the EDA 1200 converged solution for FTTH and Mobile Backhaul enables a common transport for mobile backhaul and FTTH. This way, operators can make maximum use of their fiber access investment by utilizing spare capacity of existing or new built fiber access infrastructure to provide mobile backhaul.
From a business perspective, EDA 1200 enables fixed broadband operators or converged operators to add mobile broadband services to their offerings, delivered on the same infrastructure as the fixed broadband. The solution is a true converged network solution combining the capability to provide FTTH, for demanding applications like IPTV with multiple simultaneous HDTV streams and online gaming, together with high speed mobile broadband enabling access to broadband services anytime and anywhere.
Johan Wibergh, Senior Vice President and Head of Business Unit Network at Ericsson, says: “Broadband has become one of the fastest growing services, making a large difference for people around the world. Fiber is crucial to meet the capacity increase in future networks, which includes the mobile backhaul networks as a consequence of the new emerging services enabled by LTE. With our EDA 1200 solution, Ericsson supports service providers with a solution enabling high speed broadband access in both wireless and fixed networks.”
Ericsson's EDA solutions have already been deployed in more than 150 fixed broadband access networks and with the new FTTH and mobile backhaul solution, EDA now also embraces high speed wireless broadband.
This is the second IEC InfoVision Award won by EDA solutions. In 2006, the High-Performance EDA (VDSL2) solution won in the category for Best Access Technology.

Ericsson's industry-leading EDA 1200 solution has been supporting high-bandwidth-demanding services, with advanced quality-assurance mechanisms for demanding video applications, since 2002. Ericsson’s EDA family is the most widely deployed IP DSLAM solution globally, with more than 150 networks deployed to date.
The EDA 1200 Converged Solution for FTTH and Mobile Backhaul is based on the ECN430 Ethernet Controller Node deployed as a metro access aggregation switch. ECN430 provides 20 1Gbps point-to-point Ethernet ports downlink used for connections to the radio base stations and for FTTH connections to business or residential customers, as well as four 10Gbps uplink to the metro/core network.
