Ericsson launches innovative video-on-demand TV solutions at IBC in Amsterdam

Ericsson (NASDAQ:ERIC) and Tandberg Television, part of the Ericsson Group, are set to launch a host of advanced solutions that will allow consumers to enjoy the on-demand television experience whenever and on whatever screen they want in the home.

September 11, 2009

The solutions, to be demonstrated and launched at the 2009 International Broadcasting Convention (IBC) in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, offer consumers the latest in video-on-demand (VOD) technology, including the option to move their viewing experience seamlessly across various screens. The solutions build on existing infrastructure, bringing new revenue streams and capital expenditure savings for operators.

Andrew Rowe, Vice President of Software Product Management at Tandberg Television, says: “TV consumption is changing, and consumers want on-demand entertainment that they can have whenever and wherever they want. Enabling service providers to fulfill these consumer desires is the core of the Ericsson individual TV experience.”

The new products and demonstrations at IBC include:

The industry's first device-aware back-office system for multiplatform TV

  • The enhanced OpenStream Digital Services Platform allows consumers to experience their VOD services on PCs, TVs and mobile devices, seamlessly shifting the services between each screen.
  • Leveraging on existing investments to enable multiplatform TV, the system can also support VOD deployments with both MPEG 4 AVC-capable set-top boxes and legacy MPEG 2 set-top boxes.

VOD for digital terrestrial and satellite TV platforms

  • Any multichannel TV operator can now offer consumers on-demand services via a progressive download to their set-top box or direct to the TV. This platform utilizes the high broadband speeds that consumers now have at home to deliver a complete on-demand service, including all the advanced services such as “start-over TV” and “addressable advertising”.

VOD without a set-top box

  • A new VOD solution, based on CI+ or Open IPTV Forum standards, enables service operators to deliver on-demand services such as network-based time-shift services and targeted advertisements directly to the TV without a set-top box. This system dramatically reduces capital expenditure and simplifies installation and usability. Being standards-based, it also avoids the need for system integration.

One-way VOD opens the door for on-demand services to all cable set-top boxes

  • Consumers will have access to new on-demand services even with their legacy set-top boxes thanks to the cable industry's first one-way VOD system. The system is designed for cable operators who either have a one-way hybrid fiber-coaxial cable (HFC) network or have deployed one-way set-top boxes.

See these solutions and more at the IBC 2009 Exhibition, September 11-15, Hall 1:D61, in the Amsterdam RAI Exhibition and Congress Center.
