Taiwan’s Chunghwa Telecom Lab and Ericsson Jointly Establish LTE trial network

Chunghwa Telecom Lab and Ericsson has signed a MOU to develop a trial network based on LTE, the new generation mobile network technology. The trial network is the platform developed for a Taiwan’s National Communications Projects where Chunghwa Telecom participates.

The result of this trial will be a milestone to the upgrade of Taiwan’s telecom industry, its global competitiveness as well as to help Taiwan’s ICT industry to enter into next phase of Mobile Broadband era.

High speech and high quality mobile broadband networks is needed for all kinds of consumer applications, including browsing, on-line game, or e-Book, etc, in order to deliver enriched consumer experience. The trial is to evaluate LTE performance in a live network and take it for consideration of next genera ration broadband access technology. The trial will be followed immediately after the announcement in Northern Taiwan and the result is expected to be announced mid next year.

Dr. Tu, President of Chunghwa Telecom Lab comments, “Chunghwa Telecom is committed to be the most valuable and most trustworthy ICT company.  In order to help Taiwan ICT industry to speed up development in 4G, Chunghwa Telecom will open up the trial network for the local device manufacturers’ for IoT testing.  Our expectation for Ericsson as a partner for this trial is to leverage the best resources from both parties, and pave the way for Taiwan’s  Telecom industry for its next generation technology development through Ericsson’s leadership in new generation mobile technologies.”

According to the MOU, Ericsson will provide Chunghwa Telecom with 3G PP complianced-LTE core network, LTE base stations RBS6000 series, and network management system. Focus of the trial include feature testing of IP-based LTE-SAE, MIMO, LTE-SAE network performance verification, and to display how to use LTE-SAE for various IMS applications and mobile broadband applications.

The trial is implemented right after the announcement and the result will be announced mid next year.

And they are one of the earliest operators going for LTE trials, confirmed by this joint program.  We are very pleased to be chosen as the first LTE trial supplier in Taiwan. Though the project with Chunghwa Telecom Lab, Ericsson is able to help Taiwan industry to plan for future applications, and to help Taiwan ICT industry to participate global technology standard in order to speed up the industry eco system development and therefore sustain global competitiveness.”

There are 24 countries and 51 networks have announced their evolution commitment to LTE.  With leading market share in LTE, Ericsson’s announced commercial LTE contracts include Verizon Wireless, Metro PCS, TeliaSonera and NTT DoCoMo. LTE commercial services are expected to go for mass employment in 2010. By then, the network will be able to provide consumer services in speed 10s folds of the current speed and quality.
