Mobitel is the leading GSM operator in Slovenia, renowned for its high performance standards and its technology-led approach. The operator dominates a domestic market where mobile penetration is over 80%, and was also one of the first in the world to gain a 3G license. As a complement to 3G services, Mobitel also offers WLAN in public places.
When Mobitel began the search for transmission solutions which would address both its current requirements for 2G cellular backhaul and its future 3G requirements, Ericsson was well placed to assist. Mitja Stular Ph.D, 3G Roll-out Manager, Mobitel, explains: "Since we have had a good experience with Ericsson equipment and partnership before, starting with the NMT network in 1991, continuing with GSM in 1996, we felt confident in proceeding with Ericsson. Also, our positive experience of MINI-LINK point-to-point equipment over the years, has resulted in our choice of Ericsson MINI-LINK BAS."
In the migration from 2G to 3G, it is difficult to foresee future needs when it comes to capacity growth, mobile base station location and types of traffic to be transported. MINI-LINK BAS represented the most effective solution to meet both the capacity and flexibility requirements put forward by Mobitel.
Bengt Spångö, Account Manager, Ericsson, explains: "Complementing the existing network infrastructure, which includes leased lines and Ericsson's MINI-LINK point-to-point, MINI-LINK BAS is a boost to Mobitel's reputation for using cutting-edge technology and efficiently supports the migration from 2G to 3G."
