Cingular enjoys a high profile across the US, as a technologically advanced operator, with more than 22 million mobile customers. Ambitious to incorporate high-speed wireless data into its network, Cingular first decided to implement GSM/GPRS and then rapidly opted to be the first operator in the world to deploy EDGE commercially.
The demand for rapid data transfer is clearly defined in the US. Working patterns, and the spread of commercial centers, means that commuting between the East and West coasts is common practice. Being able to download data at speed to laptop computors is a valuable asset for operators to offer.
