Wireless LAN turns railway stations into landmarks for flexible Internet access.
More than 600,000 train passengers, travellers in
transit and rail employees use the Swedish
railway stations every day.
Ericsson's wireless LAN base stations, the ABS
product family, and The Cloud enable users to
access online resources everywhere and at all
times - in waiting halls, on platforms and in
parking areas.
Sweden is one of the most advanced and mature
markets in Europe in terms of WiFi technology
adoption. A new public deployment has now
implemented innovative connectivity at the most
heavily used public places in this long and narrow
country - the railway stations.
Nationwide WiFi coverage
Europe's leading WiFi pioneer, The Cloud,
provides public wireless Internet access to long
distance travellers, commuters and rail employees
across Sweden.
The deployment is based on Ericsson wireless LAN
technology and The Cloud's multi-service provider
platform, which allows mobile operators and Internet
service providers to offer fully branded wireless
services to their customers - in any given site.
This new WiFi network covers the 50 most important
railway stations in Sweden.
The most popular meeting place in Sweden
In excess of 600,000 people pass through the train
stations in Sweden each day. The main hub is
Stockholm's Central Station, which receives
225,000 visitors per day, making it the most
frequently visited location in the whole country.
Public wireless LAN turns locations like these into
landmarks for Internet access across Sweden -
with public hotspot areas covering platforms,
waiting rooms and parking spaces.
Wireless services drive new revenues
By providing easy to use and widely available WiFi
services, Swedish stations have become ideal
locations both for business travellers, students and
passers-by needing to access online services.
Because The Cloud's network offers multiple service
provider connectivity, stations are able to offer an
inclusive service to meet the needs of their broad
visitor base.
However, wireless access is just the starting point.
Railway stations are becoming highly intelligent
communication hubs where wireless services help
drive new revenue streams for operators and
service providers, as well as landlords and real
estate companies.
Swedish stations are no longer just places to get on
and off trains, but are now also landmarks for highspeed,
digital wireless access.
Carrier-class wireless LAN
Ericsson's wireless LAN base stations, the ABS
family, help operators and service providers roll out
large-scale public wireless LAN faster and more
flexibly than any other WiFi solution. That means a
faster return on investment since services are put
into operation rapidly.
The ABS product family fits smoothly into different
kinds of network scenarios and eliminates the need
for several products at the site. Ericsson wireless LAN
base stations can function as base station, ADSL
modem, access router, firewall, IPSec gateway, LAN
switch and GRE tunnel device - all in a single device.
Thanks to integrated ADSL, the cost for last mile
access to the wireless LAN base station is
dramatically reduced.
Remote management and high service quality
Ericsson has long been a trusted partner for wireless
and mobility solutions. The unique knowledge
of wireless infrastructure and services has been the
foundation when developing the Ericsson wireless
LAN base stations.
Ericsson wireless LAN base stations are fully
manageable remotely, on the same level as other
elements that are part of public networks. The
carrier-class ABS suite is designed to be a reliable
and trusted part of any large network.
Remote management also minimizes costs - in
particular for O&M - as no costly site visits are
needed.
