As a world leader in IT&T technology, Athens International Airport (AIA) wanted to enhance the efficiency of its network, while enabling greater mobility for employees and customers and providing a strategy for migration to all-IP.
Fotis Karonis, Director, Information Technology and Telecommunications, AIA, explains the scope of the airport's operations: "Apart from being an aviation hub, AIA is also an information hub. And it is of strategic importance that we can provide information services, telecommunication services and data connectivity to all the airport community."
AIA turned to Ericsson to prepare for the future. Ericsson had previously supplied AIA with an MD110 network. Ericsson's expertise in the Greek market, reliability and global reputation in the enterprise sector highlighted Ericsson as the ideal partner for AIA's plans.
Ericsson developed a solution to enhance telecom operations at the airport. One of AIA's key goals was to consolidate its position as a leading airport in terms of technology by establishing a secure path for future migration to all-IP. Ericsson supported this by migrating the MD110 network to its IP-based PBX platform, MX-ONE™. This provided the potential for the secure migration to all-IP the airport sought.
AIA wanted to ensure its network had the best possible reliability. Ericsson's reputation as a supplier of a 99.999% reliable network played a key role in its selection.
Of key importance for AIA was the ability to mobilize its employees and this was done through the Ericsson One Phone concept. Airport customers also benefited from the solutions through a multimedia contact center, based on the Solidus eCare™ system, improving the customer service.
