Passengers can buy public transport tickets via text message and charge it to their mobile account

Ericsson to provide mobile ticketing technology and systems integration services

Azienda Trasporti dell’Area Fiorentina (ATAF, the public transport authority in Florence, Italy) today launched its Mobile Ticketing service in partnership with Ericsson and mobile operators TIM, Vodafone, Wind and 3 Italia. The service allows customers of these operators to buy public transport tickets by text message, charging the cost to their mobile account.

Through this initiative, the Italian operators are strengthening their commitment to Mobile Pay, a platform launched in May 2011 to expand the use of mobile technology as a payment method.

ATAF is the first public transport administration in Italy to implement mobile payment services. The system is convenient for passengers because a mobile phone is all they need to make a payment, and the cost is charged to their existing mobile account, so no registration or credit system is necessary.

Mobile ticketing represents a new step toward the mass adoption of m-commerce, a concept that transforms mobile devices into mobile wallets to provide a new method of payment for goods and services.

In a study on preferred mobile services conducted by the Politecnico di Milano (Polytechnic University of Milan) in Italy, 65 percent of respondents said they were interested in mobile ticketing.

Ericsson is the world leader in mobile charging and billing, with more than 1.6 billion subscribers using its solutions. Prior to the2012 Mobile World Congress, held in Barcelona, Spain, Ericsson launched its new extended suite of m-commerce solutions and services, designed to accelerate access and interconnection between the emerging m-commerce ecosystem and the financial world to fast-track the next generation of mobile financial services.

Worldwide, Ericsson delivers more than 1,300 consulting and systems integration projects every year in multi-vendor and multi-technology environments to telecom operators, governments, utilities and transport organizations. These range from end-to-end transformation projects to single-solution assignments.

How do you install more than 8,000 sites across the world’s largest country in just 14 months?

Thousands of sites. Nine time zones. Some of the harshest tundra environments on earth. Upgrading Russian operator MTS’s network to the latest 3G technology is certainly no ordinary assignment.

Ericsson’s creativity and teamwork would be pushed to the limits in the race to install up to 600 sites a week in temperatures of -50C°. And thanks to superior project management, total commitment and industry-leading technology and services, Ericsson not only ensured a great mobile broadband experience for subscribers in every part of Russia, but once again proved that extreme projects are our everyday reality.

How far do we go? We go to extremes.

Sometimes Ericsson and its customers have to overcome seemingly impossible challenges in their day-to-day operations. From ensuring continuity of service to millions of subscribers throughout a network transformation to a network rollout in the wilderness, it takes a strong partner to deliver when it counts.
Covering continental Russia, bringing 3G to the heart of the Amazon or handling a world record roll-out for Vodafone in India are all examples of our everyday reality. Watch our new Extreme Project videos and be inspired by what’s possible.

Mobile broadband coverage to 90 percent of the rural population of Chile, incorporating some of the most difficult terrain on Earth, shows what is possible when telecom vendor, operator and government work in partnership.

The three-way public-private initiative between Chile’s Ministry of Telecommunications, Ericsson and Chilean operator Entel has helped transform the lives of people and businesses in remote areas of the South American country, as well as paving the way towards participation in the Networked Society.

Nicolás Brancoli, head of Ericsson’s Customer Unit Chile, Ecuador and Peru, describes the relationship as a "golden triangle," in which the three partners share a vision for the country.

Brancoli is joined in our film by Pedro Pablo Errázuriz, Chile’s Telecommunications Minister, and Antonio Büchi, CEO of Entel PCS, to outline their views on the partnership and the success it has delivered.

Ericsson’s Steve Becher has a key role in one of the company’s largest managed services contracts. He works closely on a daily basis with his colleagues in the US to deliver services to one of North America’s largest operators. So why is he based thousands of miles away, in India?

Becher is a former Sprint employee, one of thousands who joined Ericsson as part of the huge Network Advantage managed services deal signed in 2009.

For Becher, who worked in front- and back-office management at Sprint, the transition to Ericsson resulted in an excellent career development opportunity.

Within months of joining Ericsson, and after discussing the move with his family, Becher found himself on an airplane bound for India and a new role as Director of Operations (Performance and Quality Management) at Ericsson’s Global Service Center (GSC) in India.

"The scale of Ericsson’s global managed services operations means that distance and geography become irrelevant for many of the services we supply to customers," he says.

"By working closely with our key account teams in the home territory of the operator, we can provide services from our network of Global Service Centers to anywhere in the world. Our approach is to deliver the same service as we would if we were located next door to the operator."

In Becher’s case, this means managing hundreds of Ericsson colleagues in India who are working on the specific account, and liaising with US colleagues across a range of disciplines.

"In this way, the expertise of my colleagues in the India GSC is directly available to the customer via our colleagues in the US. Time differences and physical distances have no bearing at all on how Ericsson colleagues in the India GSC and in the US work together in the interest of the customer."

And what about Becher’s own experiences since joining Ericsson?

"Less than two years after joining the company as part of the managed services deal, here I am in India more than halfway through an 18-month assignment," he says. "That speaks for itself in terms of how Ericsson views its employees and their competencies. There is a level playing field for those who have a contribution to make, which provides a great incentive for employees to pursue career and personal growth opportunities."

LTE technology is known for its ultrafast mobile broadband capabilities. Now it is helping deliver better quality live-TV coverage from events on the move, improving the experience for both broadcasters and viewers.

Most TV viewers are familiar with the irritation of picture interference or pixelation during live broadcasts – particularly if the camera shooting the images is not in a fixed location. This is simply due to the communication between the camera, the broadcaster’s satellite truck and the satellite itself.

The development of LTE technology means that, given sufficient coverage, broadcasters can bypass satellite communication and use the bandwidth of the wireless technology instead to stream HD-quality television live and free from interference, regardless of where the cameraman moves. This means high-speed mobile broadband can provide broadcasters with more flexibility for camera coverage options during live events, free from the large-scale physical support of satellite trucks and other equipment vehicles.

This is what happened in Shenzhen, China, on August 7 during the torch relay for Universiade 2011, the World University Games. In partnership with China Mobile, Ericsson began installing a trial network of 110 TD-LTE sites in March 2011. The cameras covering the torch relay were able to connect to that network, providing unsurpassed live coverage.

Mats H Olsson, President of Ericsson’s China & North East Asia region, says the broadcast showed the real potential of the technology. "Such use of mobile broadband gives broadcasters a new alternative when covering large live events, particularly when they want to get to the thick of the action without losing picture quality," he says.

"It really does have a huge impact on the quality of the television experience, both for broadcasters and viewers. The fact that the camera team can move flexibly in crowded areas makes a big difference.

"Together with our strategic partner China Mobile, we are making TD-LTE a reality in Shenzhen. I look forward to the day when people, not only in China but around the world, get to enjoy a richer and more convenient life empowered by the superior mobile networks."

The world’s first live-TV broadcast using LTE technology was in Sweden in June 2010, during the wedding of Crown Princess Victoria to Daniel Westling.

Smart logistics is technologies that enable fuel reductions and energy efficiency through better route and load planning. For example, operations management software can reduce inventory storage, fuel consumption, kilometers driven and number of vehicles traveling empty or partially loaded.

Location-based services is an enabler for smart logistics, bringing information on the location of a user’s mobile device to existing mobile applications. This creates a raft of enriched, personalized services designed to meet user and enterprise demand for increased safety, efficiency and convenience.

Scope

In this case study, the ICT system includes the usage of the mobile network and mobile phones to transmit information to the positioning systems, Geographical Information System, monitoring PCs and application servers required. The application software is assumed to be deployed in a data centre including power, cooling, building infrastructure etc.

In the original Business As Usual (BAU) system service units are sent out to perform service tasks at various locations. Service units is in this case considered to utilize individual service vehicles (personal cars). Depending on the time it takes to complete a task, units become ready for new assignments. In a typical case a service unit could be scheduled for a task on the priority list, implying perhaps a distant travel, as the service centre is not aware of the location of the address or location of the service units. Potentially, other service units may in this case be located closer to the new task, and be able to respond within a shorter time than the more distant service unit.

The primary effect of the workforce management service is the reduced need for traveling with the service vehicles. In reality this means less time spent for transportation, and more time for solving customer service requests. Additional enabling effects include potential reduction of service vehicles as the number of trips (traveled distance) is reduced.

Result

The results in the figure below is based on a mix of secondary and modeled data.

It is assumed that based on Telstra "Using ICT to drive your sustainability strategy", 2009 Location Based Services implemented at Avea will enable the following reductions:

Fuel: 8% (with a total distance of 23 000 km per subyear)

Vehicles: 17%

Field Force Management enabled by Location Based Services has the potential to reduce CO2e emissions by up to 510 kg CO2e/subscriber/year while only adding 5 kg of CO2e/subscriber/year for the service system.

The potential reduction ratio over a 20 year period could be 1:100, depending on whether the infrastructure is included and, if so, to what extent.

The absolute reduction is about 710 tonnes CO2e per year if applied to Avea Mobile customers with a total of around 1400 subscribed employees.

Mobile broadband and cloud computing are revolutionizing education in classrooms in Ghana – for pupils and teachers alike. Internet access not only provides a wealth of educational information for tutors and students attending schools under the Connect To Learn initiative, a public-private partnership of which Ericsson is a founding member, but also allows them to reach out to each other, and to the world.

Sara Kwarteng and Emmanuel Oppong are ICT teachers at the Mansoman Senior High School and Adubia Senior High School respectively – the first two schools in Africa to benefit from PC as a Service. The cloud-computing solution manages all the software and anti-virus updates remotely.

The two senior high schools are part of the Connect To Learn program that aims to bring 3G connectivity to remote villages in Africa through the Millennium Villages initiative. Many of the students attend the schools through Connect To Learn scholarships.

Sara says the new ICT labs are a huge draw for teachers and pupils alike.

“During breaks and after school they rush to the ICT labs to get some practicals. They are always keen to learn something new,” she says.

Paul Landers, Ericsson’s Connect To Learn Program Manager, says teachers in both schools have few educational resources beyond basic items, such as chalk and blackboards.

“The biggest obstacle for these teachers is the lack of textbooks to share among students,” he says. “This becomes quite a challenge when engaging up to 60 pupils at a time, which is the normal class size in these schools.”

Basic ICT tuition enables teachers to get access to the latest educational content, as well as helping them to connect with other schools through a school-to-school program, in Ghana and beyond.

Landers, a former teacher himself, says: “This has a profound effect on the teachers and students alike because, all of a sudden, they have a connection to the outside world. They learn about each other and exchange expectations.”

The teachers also use PC as a Service, which is essentially a computer with a SIM card, to carry out administrative tasks and distribute work-related information among staff.

“The service has a simple but powerful impact on the lives of teachers,” Landers says. “When I was last there in March, one of the schools had to submit enrollment figures to the national authorities. These are normally sent by post, but thanks to the computer they could e-mail the figures at a later date, which also allowed them to submit more up-to-date information as more students had enrolled by then.”

Landers says operators are keen to learn more about PC as a Service and the broader Connect To Learn initiative.

“When we talk about the goals of Connect To Learn, which is about connecting schools through mobile broadband, they are immediately interested because it shows the practical benefits of the technology,” he says. “They also see it as a chance to develop social and corporate responsibility goals, engage employees and strengthen their brand.”

Landers says there are solid commercial reasons for operators to engage with Connect To Learn, but adds that this is not the only reason why Ericsson is involved.

“Through initiatives like Connect To Learn, we illustrate how technology can be a force for good and show the positive impact that mobile broadband has on people, society and business,” he says.
