Mobile Broadband enabling healthcare in the Amazon
In northern Brazil, along the Tapajós River in the Amazon, the inhabitants of over 70 river-based communities were forced to travel up to five hours to access medical care and hospital services in the closest cities.
That changed for 15 river communities in 2006, when Saude e Alegria, a Brazilian non-governmental agency began to offer healthcare services, including emergency medical care and diagnostic services, on a large riverboat.
Third-generation moible broadband connectivity provided by Ericsson in partnership with Brazilian operator Vivo is making it possible.
The success of the Abaré hospital boat is bringing change for over 170 river communities in Brazil. Today, the Brazilian national government is implementing a river-based family health system with key public policies aimed at ensuring the constitutional rights of all river communities to access health services.
