From increasing GDP growth and boosting livelihoods to enhancing access to education and health, the “last” billion users at the base of the pyramid can benefit enormously from connectivity. Greater digital inclusion is urgent, as the State of Broadband 2012 reports. Our strategy is to drive the socio-economic value of mobile broadband so that everyone benefits from the networked society. With our partners, we drive initiatives and innovative solutions that address our most pressing global challenges, in line with the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs)and with a view to the post-2015 development agenda.

Our key initiatives

Millennium Villages

Ericsson has since 2007 provided connectivity to the Millennium Villages project, a community-led initiative that aims to lift rural African communities out of poverty. The project currently works with 79 villages in 11 countries, and tackles challenges ranging from health and education to agriculture and business development.

Connect To Learn

Connect To Learn is a global education initiative founded by Ericsson, the Earth Institute at Columbia University, and Millennium Promise. Its aim is to channel the power of ICT to enable a 21st century education to students everywhere, with a focus on secondary education for girls. More than 10,000 students from developing nations are now benefiting from connectivity in their classrooms. Hear their stories.

Refugee reconnection

A mobile phone application developed by Ericsson helps refugees find missing family members, using an anonymous database created and maintained by non-profit group Refugees United. More than 185,000 refugees worldwide have registered for the service, and families are now reconnecting. We are aiming for 1 million refugees registered by 2015.

Powering peace

Ericsson has joined PeaceEarth Foundation, a non-profit committed to global and community peace-building and citizen empowerment in conflict zones worldwide. In the three-year Youth Peacemakers program, our initial commitment is to provide ICT solutions to youth in South Sudan and Uganda.

Connecting the Amazon

Remote communities in the Amazon now have connectivity for the first time through the award-winning project Amazon Connection. Ericsson worked with operator Telefonica Vivo to provide mobile broadband to improve access to health, education and more for the 30,000 people of Belterra including remote Sururacá village where schoolchildren can now connect with students in Rio de Janeiro.

Ericsson Response

Ericsson Response is a non-profit employee volunteer initiative that works in partnership with aid agencies to facilitate ICT solutions for their key missions; humanitarian relief work in disasters and enablers of economic growth and quality of life. Among the missions in 2012, Ericsson Response provided vital communications services to relief workers in South Sudan. Hear their stories.
