Ericsson shows the next generation of TV at IBC

Sep 9, 2010

At IBC 2010, Europe’s largest exhibition for the TV industry, Ericsson (NASDAQ:ERIC) is demonstrating the end-to-endless reality of creating, managing and delivering the next-generation TV experience. From content acquisition through management, to network efficiency and multi-screen video delivery, the Ericsson booth (1.D61) will feature the industry’s broadest portfolio of solutions to enable operators, broadcasters and content owners to harness greater efficiencies, launch new services and grow revenues.

“At IBC we are showing how our end to end capabilities enable the delivery of content to multiple screens and create new TV business models,” said Staffan Pehrson, Head of Solution Area TV, Ericsson. “This is a hugely exciting time for the television industry. With an ever increasing number of devices capable of showing video content, consumers are demanding a far more enhanced range of services than ever before. Our broad product portfolio, combined with extensive industry expertise across communications and broadcasting, means we are perfectly placed to provide solutions that enable this next-generation TV experience.”

Visitors to Ericsson’s IBC booth can learn how exciting new developments within the company’s range of television solutions are addressing the latest trends and consumer demands with:

Delivery to multi-screen

Over the last couple of years there’s been a definite shift in consumer behavior and viewing patterns to include other devices besides the television. IBC will see the launch of Ericsson’s commercial multi-screen TV offering, which combines the full features of IPTV, Mobile TV, and WebTV with a common look and feel of the user interface. The solution is customizable to the operator’s exact needs and reduces operational expenditure, which in turn keeps costs down for the end user.

IPTV Remote

At IBC, Ericsson will show a new design and updated features for its Ericsson IPTV, a prototype of which was presented in February 2010 at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. The device is a single interface for controlling live broadcast TV, on-demand video, Internet video, photos, audio and any media stored on a personal computer or device with storage capabilities. The IPTV Remote can be used as a secondary TV screen, and can also function as a portable TV in a WiFi-enabled home.

Enhancing the consumer experience

Ericsson will launch and showcase a number of innovations that enhance the user experience – from HDTV, through advanced user interfaces to emerging service offerings such as over the top (OTT), multi-screen and 3D at home and in the cinema.

Managing bandwidth and delivering the best picture quality

Ericsson knows, through the Ericsson Consumer Lab studies, that picture quality is one of the most critical factors demanded by consumers. At IBC, the company will show its complete Video Processor Chassis (VPC), a high density, multi-functional, video processing platform designed for the evolving requirements of today’s broadcasters. New product launches will include a complete next-generation cable head-end solution, a new DVB-T2 head-end system, as well as enhanced solutions for IPTV, all designed to provide optimum quality at the lowest possible bit-rates, giving operators the bandwidth they need for premium video services.

Content transportation

There is no doubt that the Internet is rapidly turning into a video network. As more consumers embrace on-demand entertainment, the growth in online video is exploding. IP video is expected to increase to over 90 percent of network traffic in the next few years. IBC sees the launch of the Ericsson MDN (Media Distribution Network) - a complete solution for the delivery of video over IP. It combines a content distribution network (CDN) with Ericsson’s broader TV portfolio to deliver a media centric solution to the growing amount of video on operators’ networks.

On-demand enhancements and advanced advertising

The Ericsson booth will showcase the company’s full suite of software solutions and will introduce a new Catalog Gateway for the OpenStream Digital Services Platform by Ericsson, which allows operators to add dynamic categories to the subscriber experience. A new solution for the centralized management of campaigns for both interactive ads and VOD ads will be shown for the advanced advertising platform, AdPoint by Ericsson.

Efficient content management

Ericsson is also demonstrating the latest version of its award winning WatchPoint Content Management System (CMS) . The demonstrations will show how WatchPoint CMS can be used to manage the content’s life cycle from ingestion through preparation to distribution and removal and also how it integrates with Xport TimeShift TV to capture and deliver transcoded assets to a Web Portal and Mobile portal.
