The bulk of Ericsson's operations in Malaysia is carried out through a partnership with Lembaga Tabung Angkatan Tentera (LTAT) Tentera. Over the past 40 years, this partnership has seen the birth of several joint-ventures companies, which were eventually consolidated to become Ericsson (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd and Ericsson Expertise Center Sdn Bhd.
From the day it first stepped foot in Malaysia, Ericsson has been a key player in the evolution of the Malaysian telecommunications industry.
Ericsson is a strong partner of progress in the Malaysian telecommunications industry. Together with our customers we have been actively involved in contributing towards the advancement of telecommunications services in the country. Over the past 40 years, we:
• Introduced the country’s first crossbar exchange in 1965 with Jabatan Telekom Malaysia (JTM).
• Delivered the first transit exchange for Jabatan Telekom Malaysia in 1982.
• Deployed the first analogue mobile system - ATUR (Automatic Telephone Using Radio) project for Jabatan Telekom Malaysia in 1984.
• Launched Malaysia’s first digital cellular network with Mobikom Sdn Bhd in 1993.
• Launched Malaysia’s first GSM 900 network with Cellular Communications Network (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd (currently known as Celcom) in 1994.
• Launched Malaysia’s first GSM 1800 network with Mutiara Telecommunications Sdn Bhd (currently known as DiGi) in 1994.
• Deployed the first radio wireless access-Radio in Local Loop (RLL) for Telekom Malaysia Bhd in 1994.
• Implemented Malaysia's first cellular infrastructure sharing project - the common antenna system for cellular coverage at KL International Airport in 1998.
• The first to bring a live demo of the 3G concept to Malaysia. A 3G Roadshow was held in 1998 featuring the possibilities that 3G could offer. A 3G van was also showcased whereby live applications were featured.
• Launched Malaysia’s first GPRS network with DiGi Telecommunications Sdn Bhd in 2000.
• Incorporated Ericsson Mobile Communications Sdn Bhd, Malaysia's first mobile telephone factory in 1997 (outsourced to Flextronics in 2000).
• Showcased Malaysia's first international, 3G mobile-tomobile call between KL, Malaysia and Hong Kong in August, 2002.
• Made the country's first international voice and data call running on two 3G mobile systems (EDGE to WCDMA) in July 2003.
• Won Malaysia’s first 3G contract in 2004 and Malaysia’s first HSPA contract from Maxis in 2005.
• The first to showcase HSDPA in full mobility in South East Asia in November 2005.
• Delivered Malaysia’s first Ethernet DSL Access (EDA) solutions for high performance broadband for TIME dotCom in 2005.
