Ericsson to demonstrate first live HSDPA in South East Asia

For the first time in South East Asia, mobile phone users will be able to experience data downloads and streaming applications at speeds of up to 11 megabit-per-second (mbps), enabled by Ericsson’s live HSDPA system. Translated into consumer usage, what this means is that it will take around 4 seconds to download one minute of audio, 1.9 seconds to download a 200kB Power Point slideshow, and 1 second to download a 30kB JPEG image.

This will come alive for visitors to Ericsson’s Experience Centre located on the Singapore Expo grounds (in front of Hall 4) during CommunicAsia 2005 next week

According to Jan Signell, President of Ericsson South East Asia and Country Manager of Ericsson Malaysia, the market is no longer technology-driven, but is stimulated by consumers’ growing needs and demand for speed and richer content, which are further encouraged by the convenience and practicality of mobile services. Thus, the increased need for greater speed through WCDMA-evolved, better known as HSDPA (High Speed Downlink Packet Access).

Signell said that HSDPA represents the first essential step towards making ‘Broadband Everywhere’ a reality.

“To date, broadband access to the internet has mainly been offered over fixed technologies such as fibre, cable TV or DSL technologies. With 3G technologies, it has now become possible to deliver similar services with the benefit of mobility over the mobile networks in a cost-effective manner,” he added.

Ericsson is already at the forefront with the HSDPA solutions leveraging on its leadership in WCDMA. Ericsson HSDPA systems are already available today and Ericsson has commitments with a number of customers’ trials and is expecting to have a commercial release in the second half of 2005.

Last month, Ericsson and 3 Scandinavia performed successful demonstrations of enhanced uplink, also known as HSUPA – the first time ever that enhanced uplink, implemented in a live WCDMA system based on commercial products, is being demonstrated over the air. Until then, the focus had been on improving the downlink capacity and bit-rates, but this introduces enhancements in the uplink.

Demonstrated mobile applications include e-mail uploads at 1.5Mbps, voice-over-IP and IP-based high quality video conferencing.

Also located at the Ericsson Experience Centre at CommunicAsia is a Fixed Triple Play demonstration where visitors will experience ‘high performance broadband’ demonstration of high-speed Internet access, interactive TV and multimedia services such as messaging, voice and video telephony to the ‘broadband’ connected home.

Other Ericsson activities at CommunicAsia include the demonstration of 3G terminals interoperability on a live WCDMA network using the latest dual mode GSM/WCDMA terminals from the major handset vendors and an IP Multimedia Subsystems (IMS) Consultancy Room located at Mezzanine Floor, Hall 5.

CommunicAsia 2005 takes place on June 14 -17 in Singapore. Covering a broad spectrum of the Information & Communications Technology (ICT) industry, the annual exposition is recognized as Asia’s largest of its kind. In 2004, the event attracted more than 45,000 visitors, out of which 44% are from other countries in South East Asia.

Ericsson has identified CommunicAsia as one the major marketing platforms for its business in Asia, and has lined up an array of activities during the event to help its customers and partners around the region identify new opportunities, drive growth and stay ahead of their competitors.

Ericsson is shaping the future of Mobile and Broadband Internet communications through its continuous technology leadership. Providing innovative solutions in more than 140 countries, Ericsson is helping to create the most powerful communication companies in the world.
