Ericsson to upgrade Celcom’s nationwide 2G network

In a move to offer greater network coverage nationwide, Celcom Berhad in Malaysia has named Ericsson as the prime supplier for upgrading and modernizing its nationwide GSM network.

The upgrade, which involves 700 sites throughout Peninsular Malaysia, will improve Celcom’s quality of service to customers as well as ensuring seamless interoperability between its 2G and 3G networks.

Under this contract, Ericsson will provide a comprehensive portfolio of telecom services, which include supplying, delivering, installing, testing and commissioning of core and radio access network equipment covering radio and switch network expansions, software upgrades and network modernization.

The agreement also includes the provisioning of service-layer solutions where Ericsson will provide and integrate a Video Streaming System for Celcom’s GSM network. This will allow consumers to experience live video streaming content on their mobile phone. Deployment has already started and is expected to be completed by end of this year.

Datuk Ramli Abbas, Celcom’s chief executive officer, said that Celcom is responding to the Government’s call for nationwide coverage under the Time 2 phase to cover populated areas including highways, tourist spots, major towns and industrial zones.

“We want our subscribers to experience significantly improved network quality and more reliable mobile services with Celcom,” he added.

“This partnership signifies Celcom’s long-standing vision of providing our customers with quality services, which include improved network coverage. Ericsson has long been a leading telecommunications company with a reputation for providing strong support to customers and it also has proven GSM solutions; these are the major reasons why Celcom has chosen them to head this project,” said Datuk Ramli.

Jan Signell, President of Ericsson South East Asia and Country Manager of Ericsson Malaysia, said: “We are proud to play a key role in providing Celcom with a high-quality network to provide greater reach and support the introduction of new, innovative services.

“This agreement further strengthens Ericsson's relationship with Celcom and is a confirmation of the long partnership between the companies,” he concluded.

Ericsson is shaping the future of Mobile and Broadband Internet communications through its continuous technology leadership. Providing innovative solutions in more than 140 countries, Ericsson is helping to create the most powerful communication companies in the world.
